Report: Doubront to get call for BoSox Friday

The Red Sox are set to debut their next ballyhooed pitching prospect, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.

Speier reports that left-hander Felix Doubront will likely draw the start on Friday in the absence of righty Daisuke Matsuzaka who was placed on the disabled list on June 12 with a right forearm strain.

While the final decision has been made, Speier notes that "all signs point to the 22-year-old getting the call-up."

Doubront has made just four starts at the Triple-A level, but has shown enough to be worthy of the bigs. In those four starts, he's thrown 16 2/3 innings, giving up a scant two runs while whiffing 16 and walking five. He also has eight starts in Double-A Portland, posting a 4-0 record to go along with a 2.51 ERA.

Doubront throws a low- to mid-90s fastball and pairs that with an excellent changeup and an evolving curveball.

"He’s always had a great changeup. Since he was 18, 19 years old, people have said he had a major league changeup," Mike Cather, Doubront’s pitching coach at Double-A Portland in 2009, told Speier in spring training.

Doubront was signed as an international free agent in 2004 and scuffled upon his introduction to Class A in 2006, but fully mastered the three Class-A levels by 2008. Since then, he's called Portland, and most recently Pawtucket, his home.

Now, at least for one day, Boston is his home.
