Becket throws a simulated game

Boston's Josh Beckett threw a simulated game before the Red Sox game with the Rays at Tropicana Field on Tuesday.

Beckett threw 65 pitches to Gulf Coast League players and Jeremy Hermida, according to the Providence Journal 's Brian MacPherson .

Hermida stood in the batter's box for two at-bats, but didn't swing.

Beckett threw all his pitches, MacPherson reports, and gave up just one fly ball to the outfield.

Beckett was scheduled to throw in a Gulf Coast League game in Sarasota, but rain forced him to throw the simulated game indoors at Tropicana Field. Beckett's been out since May 18 with a strained lower back. The Triple-A Pawtuckett Red Sox are home on Sunday, when he is scheduled to pitch again.

Hermida is on the disabled list with broken ribs, but was scheduled to take batting practice today.

UPDATE: Beckett will indeed pitch Sunday in Pawtuckett .

Pedroia leaves game with foot injury

Dustin Pedroia left Boston's game in San Francisco in the third inning after fouling a ball off of the inside of his left foot in the third inning.

Pedroia, who hit three home runs on Thursday, stayed in the game long enough to work a walk, but he struggled to get to first. Pedroia was replaced by Mike Cameron to pinch-run.

Cameron stayed in the game and went to center field. Bill Hall moved from right field to second base and Darnell McDonald moved from center field to right field.

It seems like another day, another injury for the Red Sox. Jacoby Ellsbury (rib), Josh Beckett (back), Jeremy Hermida (ribs) and Mike Lowell (hip) are currently on the disabled list, while Kevin Youkilis (arm) isn't 100 percent. Victor Martinez has also played through pain, while Cameron and Daisuke Matsuzaka have recently come off the disabled list.

UPDATE: Pedroia was on crutches after the game, but manager Terry Francona told the Boston Herald 's Michael Silverman there was no break, but he would be re-evaluated on Saturday.

"I'm sore,” he said. "I’ll get checked out [Saturday] and make sure we get to the bottom of everything, but I’m pretty disappointed. I’ve never really hit a ball there before. But I’ll be all right."

Lowell, 36, is hitting .225/.313/.338 in limited time with the Red Sox. Lowell finds himself behind new third baseman Andre Beltre and Kevin Youklis at first. Lowell has 80 plate appareances in 27 games for the Red Sox and is in the lineup tonight, just his third game this month.

However, Lowell may be needed. Kevin Youkilis is out of tonight's game after leaving Thursday night's game with back spasms. Manager Terry Francona said Youlilis should be available to pnch hit Friday and would be back in the lineup Saturday, according to MASN .

UPDATE: Rosenthal adds that the Red Sox may be looking to add outfield depth with the injuries to Jeremy Hermida and Jacoby Ellsbury, but Mike Cameron playing hurt. How about David DeJesus?

Via Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe on Twitter:

  • Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon has been reinstated after being on the bereavement list for an undisclosed reason since Monday.
  • Outfielder Jeremy Hermida has been placed on the disabled list with a rib injury suffered last week. He's the second Red Sox player this season (Jacoby Ellsbury the other) to go on the disabled list after a rib injury caused by a collision with third baseman Adrian Beltre.
  • Reliever Joe Nelson was designated for assignment.
  • Right-hander Scott Atchison was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
