St. Louis outfielder Ryan Ludwick aggravated his calf strain while jogging on a treadmill, and the Cardinals are going to put him on the 15-day disabled list.
Ludwick, a former All-Star and a key part of the Cardinals' offense, first felt the tightness in his right cals June 22 and last played June 25. The DL assignment will be retroactive to Saturday and he'd be eligible to be activated the day before the All-Star break.
Manager Tony LaRussa said the Cardinals would probably call up an outfielder to replace Ludwick, whose spot in the lineup has been covered by Randy Winn and Nick Stavinoha, on the roster. The top candidates appear to be Joe Mather, Jon Jay and Allen Craig.
Ludwick is batting .273/.337/.485 this season with 11 homers and 42 RBIs.
Also Friday, the Cardinals called up infielder Tyler Greene and optioned reliever Fernando Salas to Triple-A Memphis, getting back to a 12-man pitching staff.
