Red Sox moves

Via Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe on Twitter:

  • Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon has been reinstated after being on the bereavement list for an undisclosed reason since Monday.
  • Outfielder Jeremy Hermida has been placed on the disabled list with a rib injury suffered last week. He's the second Red Sox player this season (Jacoby Ellsbury the other) to go on the disabled list after a rib injury caused by a collision with third baseman Adrian Beltre.
  • Reliever Joe Nelson was designated for assignment.
  • Right-hander Scott Atchison was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

UPDATE: Hermida has fractures in five ribs, an injury very similar to Ellsbury's. "Beltre is going to take out our whole outfield," manager Terry Francona told reporters .

Papelbon leaves Red Sox; Bonser activated

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said today that closer Jonathan Papelbon will be away from the team for three days on a bereavement leave. The reason was not disclosed.

Papelbon's departure created a roster spot to activate right-hander Boof Bonser from the disabled list. Bonser has been out since suffering a groin injury during spring training. He was on a rehab assignment for that injury when he experienced trouble with his surgically repaired right shoulder. Bonser will work out of the bullpen.
