Hot Routes 6.3.11: Cooley is a Jerky Boy?

  • I hate to keep talking about zany members of the Washington organization, but this story about Chris Cooley's prank-call love is just too good to pass up. Apparently, Cooley spent the offseason playing jokes and jokes and jokes on people via the phone. Via Andrew Sharp of SB Nation, Cooley went on Rich Eisen's podcast and told stories about pranks he likes to pull. He called Carson Palmer, he claims, and pretended to be John Elway and told him, "Listen, I hate Tim Tebow. I want you. I want you out here in Denver." And then he called Elway and pretended to be Carson and then he called John Fox ... and, well, it really doesn't sound like it can be true. But either way, it's enjoyable.

Colt Brennan released from hospital

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Some good news out of Hawaii this morning. Colt Brennan, involved in a head-on car collision on Nov. 19, has been released from the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that smashed into the car driven by Brennan’s girlfriend, Shakti Stream, after Stream crossed the center line remains hospitalized. In a statement released by Rep1Sports, Brennan asked for prayers for 47-year-old Theresa Wang.

The full statement:

It is with a heavy heart that I am able to leave the hospital today, as my prayers and thoughts remain with Theresa Wang and her family. I am so grateful for all of the support I received over the past week. I am also relieved that Shakti is close to a full recovery. I ask that the same support I received be directed to Ms. Wang as she recovers from this unfortunate accident.

I thank God to be alive today, and am thankful to everyone who played a role in providing medical attention to each of us. The EMTs, everyone at Kona Community Hospital and Queens Medical Center, were simply amazing. They saved my life. I am thankful to my family and friends that stood by my side and prayed for my recovery. I am thankful to everyone who was concerned for me, especially the people of Hawaii and the UH Football community. Your spirit is my strength.

I will return with my parents to Orange County to continue treatment for my injuries. I am determined to make a complete recovery, and my desire to continue playing football burns stronger than ever.

An update on Colt Brennan

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Colt Brennan, involved in a bad car accident Friday in Hawaii, is heavily sedated and he hasn’t spoken since the car driven by his girlfriend met another car head-on.

That was the updated provided by his father, Terry Brennan, today to the Honolulu Star Advertiser.

"He's far from being alert," Terry Brennan told the paper. "There's no real conversation with him other than he acknowledges we're here (with hand gestures). He hasn't been able to speak. He'll moan and groan, and maybe point to his neck brace. It's uncomfortable. They have tubes and IVs. He has not conversed at all."

Brennan also said there’s damage to one of Colt Brennan’s eye sockets, but doctors are monitoring that to see how it responds in the next few days. Colt Brennan also was on a ventilator until Saturday, and he might have to undergo surgery on his broken left clavicle.

Report: Colt Brennan in serious condition

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

According to various reports, former Redskins QB – and former Hawaii star – Colt Brennan has been hurt in a car accident in Hawaii.

KHON2 News in Honolulu reports he’s in serious condition at a Kona hospital and that Brennan crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head-on.

Brennan was drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft by Washington, which released him in the preseason of this year. He then signed with the Raiders but was cut just before the regular season began.

More on this story as it develops.

UPDATE (6:39 p.m.):
The Honolulu Star Advertiser has some good info regarding the accident.

The incident occured at 2:30 p.m. ET (that's 9:30 a.m. local time), and Brennan might have suffered head injuries. He was taken to the hospital with face lacerations. He was a passenger in the car, not driving it.

UPDATE (8:31 p.m.): Ryan Tollner, Brennan's agent, has released a statement (H/T to Mac's Football Blog )

"We have been informed that Colt was injured as a passenger in car accident this morning on The Big Island of Hawaii. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital and has since been transported to Honolulu for further medical attention. We do not know the severity of his injuries at this point, but that his condition is serious. We are not aware of the status of anyone else involved in the accident but our thoughts and prayers are with them. No details of the accident have been revealed to us. Colt’s family asks that the public is respectful of the hospitals and medical staffs focused on treating the individuals involved in this accident."

UPDATE (10:34 p.m.): Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio received a text from Brennan's former coach at Hawaii, June Jones. It read: "Broken ribs, collarbone, head trauma. Life flight to Honolulu from Kona."

UPDATE (10:50 p.m.): Brennan's father, Terry Brennan, has told the Star Advertiser that his son is listed in stable condition with head trauma, several broken ribs and a broken left clavicle.

"We're upset," Terry Brennan told the paper. "We're hopeful all of the victims are OK. This is our worst nightmare. You always worry about safety, whether you're in Hawaii or on the mainland."

Brennan was the passenger in a SUV driven by his girlfriend, Shakti Stream. After the head-on collision, Stream managed to crawl from the car, but Brennan was stuck inside. The driver of the other vehicle, a 47-year-old woman, also was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The police have opened two negligant injury investigations, and at this point, it's unclear whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

UPDATE (12:00 a.m.):
KHON2.com interviewed witnesses to the accident.

Said Damien Julius, a truck driver, on finding a man pinned inside the SUV (he didn't know it was Brennan at first):

"From the way he was positioned under the vehicle I saw his head and I could hear him screaming and I was trying to put the towel because there was bleeding coming, yeah," said Julius. "There was a small crack, I would say about a foot that he was trying to squeeze out of that his head could barely fit out of but he was moving, he was trying to get out of the car."

Colt Brennan finds a new team (for now)

Posted by Andy Benoit

Colt Brennan, one of the most prolific college quarterbacks of all-time, is now an Oakland Raider. Brennan was cut by the Redskins last week.

In Oakland, Brennan is essentially just a camp body. The Raiders already have their starter in Jason Campbell. Behind him are two veterans with starting experience: Bruce Gradkowski and Kyle Boller. Plus, Charlie Frye, another proven backup with some starting experience, is also on the roster.

Ravens trade QB John Beck to Redskins

From the Baltimore Sun:

The Ravens traded fourth-string quarterback John Beck to the Washington Redskins for cornerback Doug Dutch, who was on the Redskins' practice squad last season.

Dutch, 24, is 5 feet 11, 199 pounds. He was undrafted coming out of Michigan in 2009 and was added to the Redskins' practice squad in November.

This move adds depth to the Ravens' injury-filled cornerback group.

The trade of Beck doesn't mean Troy Smith is guaranteed a spot on the team. There is still a chance that the Ravens will only keep two quarterbacks (Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger).

From the Redskins side of things, this likely means the end of Colt Brennan. The Hawaii gunslinger was battling Richard Bartel for the No. 3 quarterback job. Rex Grossman is slated to be the No. 2. However, Grossman may get pushed by Beck, who was a second-round pick of the Dolphins in 2007.

UPDATE: Redskins inside Chris Russell says Brennan will indeed be released.
