Giants turning to unfamiliar QBs

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

With Giants QB Eli Manning wearing his ballcap to hide the three-inch cut inflicted upon him by the Jets and with backup QB Jim Sorgi out for the next few weeks with an injured throwing shoulder, third-stringer Rhett Bomar and newly-signed Dominic Randolph got plenty of reps at practice today.

So, what happened?

From the New York Daily News :

Well, Bomar played fairly well completing some screen passes early on with no defense, making one nice throw to tight end Kevin Boss over the middle and running the two-minute drill solidly. He did a decent job in red zone offense drills as well. But he also misfired on his final two throws of the afternoon, both deep shots at the end of the two-minute drill.

Randolph was even more uneven, although you can’t blame a guy who just got to camp and didn’t even have his football equipment with him. How little stuff did Randolph have? Midway through stretching, somebody was bringing him pads.

Anyway, he did throw two touchdown passes in red zone drills, and he made a handful of good throws while running the scout team. He also missed an open receiver badly on a quick out, though.

Not that any of this really matters. Once Sorgi returns to health, Bomar most likely will return to the third team and Randolph – an undrafted free agent out of Holy Cross – will return to the wonderful world of free agency. For now, with Manning not scheduled to play Saturday, the Giants will carry four quarterbacks, and Bomar and Randolph should see all the snaps vs. the Steelers.
