UPDATE 4:50 p.m. EST: Jay Glazer of FOX Sports says Jim Mora. Jr. is interviewing in Denver. Mora is also still pondering Philadelphia.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, fired Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has found a new home: Carolina. McDermott interviewed in Denver over the weekend but will assume a role on Ron Rivera’s new staff. Rivera’s defensive pedigree likely means that McDermott will merely ride shotgun, rather than drive the Panthers’ defense.
As for who will replace McDermott in Philadelphia…
According to Jeff McLane and Jonathan Tamari of the Philadelphia Inquirer, there are three candidates for the now-vacant defensive coordinator job: Jim Mora Jr., Dick Jauron and Bill Davis. Mora and Jauron both have head coaching experience (Mora with the Seahawks and Falcons…where he coached Eagles star quarterback Michael Vick; Jauron with the Bills, Bears and, briefly, Lions). Davis was most recently the defensive coordinator in Arizona.
The interview process has not begun, as Andy Reid is on vacation. Reid may need to hurry home, though, because Jauron’s name, along with Dave Wannstedt’s, has surfaced in Cleveland. Then again, Jauron is already on Philly’s staff as the secondary coach, so don’t expect Reid to be in the dark about his happenings.
The Eagles want experience at Jim Johnson’s old D coordinator post. Strictly in that sense, Jauron would be the best fit. Davis is a surprise contender, as the Cardinals ranked near the bottom in every major defensive category this season. They did, however, finish first in red zone defense, an area where the Eagles were awful in historic proportions.
