Raheem Morris not quite as boastful

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

So, Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris, would you care to amend your comments about Tampa Bay being the best team in the NFC?

"We don't have the fewest losses anymore, so we can't be right now,'' he told the media, including the Tampa Tribune, after the Buccaneers fell 27-21 in Atlanta. "If I were to say that now, it would not be an accurate statement.''

OK, there you go (though it doesn’t sound like he thinks he’s wrong. Even now.)

But while people scoffed at his statement two weeks ago, Morris is not far off. The Buccaneers fell a yard short on a fourth and one from Atlanta’s 2-yard line late in the fourth quarter as the Falcons preserved their victory. If LeGarrette Blount somehow scores on the play, Tampa Bay likely wins. And then what?

For now, at 5-3, there aren’t many teams in the NFC that are clearly better than Tampa Bay. The Giants, yes. The Falcons, yes. The Saints, probably (New Orleans did dominate the Buccaneers 31-6 three weeks ago). The Eagles and the Packers, maybe but leaning toward yes.

But if there’s one thing we know, it’s this. This isn’t the same Tampa Bay squad that finished 3-13 last year. The Buccaneers are much better. Maybe not the best team in the NFC, but definitely closer to the best than most of us thought possible.
