Casserly: Broncos bench rookie DB Perrish Cox

Posted by Will Brinson

Broncos' rookie cornerback Perrish Cox became an immediate thorn in the side of interim coach Eric Studesville's first week when he was arrested for sexual assault earlier in the week .

He seemed like a lock to face some sort of suspension provided allegations bear out in a way in which he's guilty of something and while the Broncos certainly don't want to presume anything, CBS Sports' Charley Casserly reported on The NFL Today that he won't be playing Sunday and that the Broncos are going to wait and see what the NFL does before punishing Cox.

"He'll be benched today, he will not dress today for the game," Casserly said. "He will be fined $23,000 by the Broncos which is the max they can fine him for missing a meeting and practice on Friday. No other discipline [is coming] at this point, and they're going to let the league take it over from here and react after the league finishes out their investigation."

For the Broncos, this is the best way to handle things. By overreacting and suspending Cox for a lengthy period of time, they could end up doing the wrong thing. But by disciplining him within the rules of the team and for only a small portion of time, they make it clear to their fans that they won't tolerate off-field issues.

And by allowing the NFL to conduct its investigation, the Broncos can legitimately take a "wait and see" approach and allow this situation to fully unfold before they issue any sort of punishment.

UPDATED (1:48 p.m.): The Broncos have released a statement on Cox:

National Football League procedure indicates that the matter involving Perrish Cox is subject to review and potential discipline through only its Personal Conduct Policy as well as the legal system. The Denver Broncos are respectful of those regulations and will be fully compliant and cooperative throughout that process.

While the Broncos have limited authority with regard to potential discipline stemming from this specific matter under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the club has fined Perrish the maximum amount for missing meetings and practice on Friday.

The Denver Broncos consider this a very serious matter and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
