Analyzing the Browns' OL, DL injuries

Posted by Andy Benoit

The Browns took a hit up front on both sides of the ball Wednesday. Offensively, right tackle Tony Pashos, who has played in all six games and has three starts, was placed on Injured Reserve with an ankle injury. Defensively, end Robaire Smith (five starts on the season), went on I.R. with a back problem.

The loss on offense is not devastating, quite frankly. Pashos is inconsistent, thanks to questionable change-of-direction skills and pass-blocking technique. Utility backup John St. Clair can fill in. St. Clair was solid at right tackle last season.

Defensively, Smith is a meaty veteran, but he tends to wear down late in the season. That said, the Browns don’t have much depth on the edge. Brian Schaefering, an undrafted third-year pro, will likely take over.

With Pashos and Smith gone, the Browns had two vacant roster spots to fill. They called on diminutive return specialist Yamon Figurs (who won’t see much action once Joshua Cribbs is healthy) and Pat McQuistan (a young journeyman offensive lineman who was most recently cut by the Jaguars).
