Merriman injured in first practice as a Bill

Posted by Will Brinson

Shawne Merriman was excited about joining the Buffalo Bills because it offered him an opportunity to show that he's healthy and capable of producing at a new-contract-worthy, Pro Bowl-level.

That honeymoon's been canceled already though, because, according to our Bills Rapid Reporter Mark Ludwiczak, Merriman suffered an injury in his first practice as a Bill.

Ludwiczak reports that Lights Out "left the field with an apparent injury to his lower right leg after about 15 minutes."

So, yeah, that's kind of awkward, especially since that's the same leg with which he had Achilles' issues earlier this year.

The severity of the injury isn't known yet, but if it's anything serious, it could be the kind of thing that costs Merriman a chunk of change going forward.

Merriman 'definitely' won't re-sign with Bills?

Posted by Will Brinson

Sifting through the introductory quotes from Shawne Merriman's first press conference as a Buffalo Bill, you would think he's thrilled to be there -- Merriman constantly deflected attention from his own career to the talented travails of his new team team.

But there have been plenty of rumblings that Merriman wasn't thrilled about getting nabbed by the winless Bills and flown to Buffalo -- John Czarneck of Fox Sports reports that Merriman 'definitely won't be re-signing with the Bills,' even though they've got a clear need at his position, because of his unhappiness with his current location.

That seems about right, but before we insult Buffalo just because they're a winless team in a boring city who frequently travels to Canada, it's important to note that they might not want to sign Merriman either.

After all, given their record (0-7) and their release of former first-rounders (Marshawn Lynch and Trent Edwards) this year, it's pretty obvious that Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey are cleaning house and putting their stamp on this franchise.

Even if Nix is really high on Merriman (he was a big part of San Diego drafting the linebacker out of Maryland in 2005), overpaying a 26-year-old who moves like a 35-year-old isn't nearly as a intelligent as utilizing resources to pick up a talented linebacker in the draft.

Either way, though, classifying this acquisition as a "symbiotic rental" seems like the best idea.
