Hot Routes 6.16.11: Taylor, Asomugha not close

Posted by Ryan Wilson
  • Come again? We think it goes without saying that Nnamdi Asomugha is a better corner than, say, the Steelers' Ike Taylor -- but apparently not. Using facts and common sense, Shutdown Corner's Doug Farrar takes the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's John Harris to task for suggesting that Taylor is better than Asomugha.
  • Still wanted: QB. Pat White may not have been the answer (and Pryor almost certainly isn't), but according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins' first order of business once the lockout ends will be finding a veteran QB to compete with Chad Henne
  • We need Matlock. If there's something we can all get behind it's that the lawyers shouldn't be allowed in the room during CBA negotiations. PFT's Mike Florio offers up yet another reason to lock out the lawyers: money (shocking, right?).

Dhani Jones wants to be a spokesman

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Apparently, the NFL lockout is playing crazy tricks on players’ minds.

Earlier this evening, Seahawks WR Golden Tate tweeted just how excited he was to save $10.62 at the grocery store (he even gave a rather enthusiastic Yippy! at the end of his update).

Bengals LB Dhani Jones, meanwhile, is trying to figure out another way to make money. So, he’s trying out to be the next spokesman for Aflac, and the Cincinnati Enquirer found his video application.

Jones, of course, has plenty of TV work under his belt, including The Travel Channel’s “Dhani Tackles the Globe,” his Febreze Sport commercials, and, apparently, a guest spot on “The Mo’Nique Show” in 2010 (thanks IMDB!!!).

So, check out the video below and judge for yourself. Does Jones have what it takes to replace the legendary Gilbert Gottfried*? Or is he just plain annoying?

*I’m not being sarcastic here. Gottfried’s standup, in my opinion, can be quite funny.

Tolbert carted off the field on backboard

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Chargers RB Mike Tolbert had to be strapped to a backboard and taken by stretcher off the field after a nasty collision with two Bengals defenders left him facedown on the turf.

The play occurred with about 6 minutes to go in the first quarter when Tolbert took a handoff from Chargers QB Philip Rivers. He went around the left side of the line and met up with Bengals LB Dhani Jones and S Reggie Nelson. It appeared that Tolbert collided head-first with the side of Nelson’s helmet.

He fumbled the ball, and it was recovered by Bengals S Roy Williams.

He was on the turf for close to 10 minutes, before trainers wheeled him off the field. As he left, Tolbert briefly gave a thumbs-up with his right hand.

UPDATE (5:15 p.m.):
Tolbert has a neck injury, but he's moving his arms and legs.

Hot Routes 12.9.10: Dolphin travel news!!!

Hot Routes

Posted by Josh Katzowitz and Andy Benoit

Another week, another migraine for Vikings WR Percy Harvin.

The Lions have to move one of their best defenders, Kyle Vanden Bosch, to the IR list, ending his season.

The Giants are letting the Dolphins practice at their facility Friday and Saturday as Miami prepares to face the Jets. Apparently, this was a big news story in New York. Mara says it must have been a slow news day. (It was.)

Also, the Dolphins will arrive in New York a day early in order to adjust to the climate and, at the request of owner Stephen Ross, see a Broadway show (Lombardi).

Yeah Jameel McClain is going to go ahead and appeal that $40,000 fine for blasting Pittsburgh’s Heath Miller last Sunday.

It doesn’t matter how much pain he has, Chargers TE Antonio Gates said he’s going to play vs. the Chiefs this Sunday.

Here’s what Tim Tebow had to say about Urban Meyer resigning.

Falcons clinch a playoff berth. (Okay, so we’re already assuming they’ve won this Sunday’s game against Carolina).

The Cardinals have a way of finding talented defensive tackles who can’t quite get their motors running early in their career. Is this year’s first-round pick Dan Williams another one of those guys? Depends how you interpret Ken Whisenhunt’s comments.

The Bucs confirm what we already knew about RT Jeremy Trueblood a few weeks ago.

Two NFL players made Forbes’ “best dressed” list: Tom Brady (of course) and Bengals LB Dhani Jones (a bowtie aficionado).

The Cowboys have had at least four Pro Bowlers every year since 2002. That could change this season.

The Lions could find themselves playing in a road atmosphere at Ford Field this Sunday.
