Pick-6 Podcast: MDS, end-of-year awards

By Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

The playoffs are upon us but before we go full throttle for five more weeks of football, we first take a moment to look back on the 2011 regular season.

First, we discuss the latest names to join the ranks of the unemployed: Raheem Morris, Steve Spagnuolo and Bill and Chris Polian, as well as a Tuesday addendum to Black Monday's victims, former Bears general manager Jerry Angelo.

Then the conversation turns to our best and worst of 2011 list, from league MVP to biggest free-agent bust.

Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com joins the podcast give us his awards, discuss the Lions' tall task of facing the Saints in New Orleans, the Steelers-Broncos matchup, and what the future holds for the Colts now that the Polians aren't in the front office.

Talking starts promptly...

Pick-6 Podcast: Week 16 Film Room

By Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

There are two weeks left in the regular season. The four months have flown by but there's plenty to be decided over the final fortnight. Which is why we call on Andy Benoit, our in-house Xs and Os guru, to break it all down.

Some of the highlights from his weekly visit to the show:
  • Should both Patriots tight ends make the Pro Bowl?
  • Can Reggie Bush can run wild again in Week 16?
  • Why should Kevin Kolb be the Cardinals' starter in 2012?
  • Does John Elway really support Tim Tebow?
  • Are Chargers a capable playoff team?
  • Related: can San Diego beat Detrot this week (if not, ignore the previous bullet point)?
  • Related, part II: Are the Eagles a capable playoff team?
  • Why are the Giants flapping their gums ahead of their matchup with the Jets?
  • Should the Packers be worried?
All right, let's get to it...

Pick-6 Podcast: Recapping Ravens, previewing MNF

By Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

The Ravens blew it. They had a chance to wrap up the AFC North, and maybe even the No. 1 seed in the conference and all they had to do was beat the Chargers in San Diego. It seemed eminently possible since San Diego had lost six games in a row after starting the season 4-1, and Baltimore was considered one of the NFL's best teams.

Instead, the Ravens' inability to beat lesser opponents on the road haunted them once again and now it could mean the difference between a first-round bye and traveling to Denver as a wild-card team.

So we talk about that, as well as what the win means for the 7-7 Chargers. Do they still have a chance at the postseason? (No way, right? Right?!)

In addition to San Diego's surprising win, Week 15 was chocked full of upsets and we discuss those, too: from Romeo Crennel and the Chiefs upending the previously undefeated Packers, to the Colts finally getting a win (thanks, Tennessee!), to the Panthers thoroughly outplaying the Texans, as well as the ever-evolving playoff landscape

Finally, we preview a suddenly important Steelers-49ers Monday Night Football matchup.

Pick-6 Podcast: Warren Moon, Week 15 film room

By Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Warren Moon's NFL career spanned 17 seasons and included 9 Pro Bowls. In 2006, he was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He joins the podcast to discuss the St. Jude Warren Moon Hall of Fame Invitational Golf Tournament, a charity event that supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a pediatric treatment and research facility that defines its mission as "…advancing cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay."

Moon also talks Texans (playoff football in Houston!), Cam Newton's success, the 2012 quarterback draft class, and if Newton's success has made it easier for people to rank Robert Griffin highly.

Then Andy Benoit joins the show for his weekly Film Room segment. He breaks down whether the Lions and Raiders are fading, who's going to win the epic battle between Tim Tebow and Tom Brady, if the Chiefs and Dolphins can land good head coaches, how well Marshawn Lynch is running right now, if Houston's defense can continue to dominate without Wade Phillips, whether Eli Manning is "elite," and if the Giants are making a 2007-esque run.

All right, let's get to it...

Pick-6 Podcast: Harrison suspended, coaches fired

By Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Tuesdays are usually pretty slow during the regular season. But last week Jack Del Rio got canned, and today the NFL suspended Steelers linebacker Jame Harrison one game for blasting Browns quarterback Colt McCoy.

Oh, and on Monday, Todd Haley and Tony Sparano got the Del Rio treatment and now the Chiefs and Dolphins are in the market for head coaches, too.

So, yes, we have plenty to talk about on the latest edition of the podcast.

Did Harrison's punishment fit the crime(s)?

Who's on the head-coaching short list in Miami and Kansas City?

As always, we're joined by ProFootballTalk.com's Michael David Smith. We talk playoffs for the Lions and Bears, the latest Tebow awesomness (specifically: can the Steelers win a wild card game in Denver? We couldn't believe we asked that either), the Haley news, and T.J. Yates' accomplishment in Cincinnati Sunday.

All right, let's get to it...

Pick-6 Podcast: Warrick Dunn, Week 14 film room

By Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

It's the middle of the week which can only mean one thing: Andy Benoit joins the podcast to preview the upcoming slate of games, film-room style.

There's plenty to discuss as the playoff races heat up in both conferences. The Giants face the Cowboys in a matchup that could determine who wins the NFC East.(Although Dallas' schedule the rest of the way is markedly easier than New York's. Of course, who thought the Cards would beat the Cowboys in Week 13?)

And the Titans face the Saints in game Tennessee desperately needs to keep pace in the AFC South and in the wild-card race.

But that's not all!

We also talk to former NFL running back Warrick Dunn about his work with Crown Royal at the Cowboys-Giants get-together this weekend. We also get his thoughts on Michael Vick's comeback story, as well as the Eagles' struggles this season.

Pick-6 Podcast: Week 12 Preview

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

It is, as they say, a short week. Week 12 of the NFL season is already three games old, with the Packers, Cowboys and Ravens all winning on Thanksgiving.

On Sunday and Monday, everybody else gets to play and, well, we're here to talk about it.

We quickly hit all the games before Andy Benoit joins the show to discuss whether Andrew Luck or Cam Newton is still a debate, if the Texans can overcome the loss of Matt Schaub, how much trouble the Bears are in, if the Raiders have officially "won" the Carson Palmer trade, if Philly can get back in the hunt, how much Tebowing the Tebows can Tebow against the Chargers on Sunday.

Finally, we wonder if the Giants are going into a full-blown free fall.

(Note: we taped this podcast on Tuesday, before the Broncos made Kyle Orton a free man, so feel free to fast-forward through the parts where we speculate on where he might land since the Chiefs officially claimed him Wednesday.)

Pick-6 Podcast: Thanksgiving Games Preview

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

It took 15 minutes of football for the Patriots offense to get warmed up Monday night, but once they did they made easy work of the Chiefs, who were forced to start journeyman quarterback Tyler Palko.

What does the win mean for New England? In the short term, it puts a little more distance between them and the rest of the AFC East. Taking the longer view, the Patriots have one more "tough" game -- the Eagles in Week 13 -- then it's smooth sailing until the playoffs.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, are in desperate need of a quarterback. Palko lacks arm strength and accuracy, and it's reasonable to think that Kansas City will invite some veterans in to work out.

We also preview the three Thanksgiving Day games: can the Lions upset the Packers? Do the Dolphins really have a chance to beat the Cowboys? And what are we to make of Harbaugh Bowl I?

We talk about that and more. (Also note: we'll be back Friday for a quick rest-of-Week 12 preview podcast. Enjoy the turkey, everybody.)
