Aviva Stadium to host Notre Dame and Navy

Posted by Tom Fornelli

Notre Dame and Navy have been facing each other on the gridiron every year since 1927 but in 2012 the two will be meeting for only the second time outside of the United States.  The 2012 contest between the two teams, on  September 1, will be played in Dublin, Ireland.  It won't be the first time the Fighting Irish have fought in front of the actual Irish as both teams played in Dublin's Croke Park in 1996.

This time around they'll be playing at Aviva Stadium.

“To see this stadium is to believe it has to be one of the finest venues in the world,” said [Navy AD Chet] Gladchuk. “Although modest in capacity, few stadiums anywhere have attended to the detail, aesthetics and fan comfort found at Aviva.

“I guarantee those who travel to Ireland and attend this event will enjoy an experience that will be awesome and a memory not to be forgotten. Navy is very much looking forward to our visit and the wonderful experience we expect our coaches, players, fans and friends will enjoy.”

Aviva Stadium, which has a capacity of 50,000, was also be the host of the Europa League final in May of 2011.

This year's edition of the rivalry will be played in a neutral site as well, at the New Meadowlands Stadium on October 2.
