Brandon Willis officially enrolls at UCLA

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Defensive tackle Brandon Willis has landed has landed at UCLA. Again.

After initially committing to Tennessee as a senior in high school (twice), Willis signed a letter of intent with North Carolina after Lane Kiffin's staff left for USC. After six months in Chapel Hill, he then packed up his bags and headed west to UCLA in March. He lasted all of seven months in Westwood before deciding to transfer back to the Tar Heels in March. In August, he announced he was leaving UNC once again.

Now he's back with the Bruins and enrolled in classes, the school has announced. He will begin practicing with the team, which badly needs healthy defensive linemen, Tuesday afternoon but will not be eligible to play in a game. The school has begun the NCAA waiver process in order to get him eligible to play this season but he will only be able to practice until it is completed.

So it looks like Willis is back where he began (transferring to), just with a few more frequent flier miles in his account. Heck, Willis could be the first person to be on a Pac-10, Pac-12 and ACC team before finally playing a down in the Pac-16.

Is Brandon Willis going back to UCLA?

Posted by Tom Fornelli

I'm truly beginning to wonder if Brandon Willis prefers flying back and forth across the country to actually playing football.

Here's a quick recap of what Willis has done since his senior year in high school. First, Willis gave his verbal commitment to Tennessee, twice. He also decommitted from Tennessee twice before signing a letter of intent with North Carolina in February of 2010. Then, after spending six months as a Tar Heel, Willis decided he wanted to give the west coast a try and transferred to UCLA.

Willis then spent seven months with the Bruins before announcing he wanted to transfer back to North Carolina in March. Yes, well, in the shocker of all shockers, Willis recently announced he was leaving North Carolina again.

Guess where he's likely headed this time? Yep, time to rack up those frequent flyer miles as Willis appears to be headed back to UCLA. That's according to the Daily News in Los Angeles. How long will Willis be at UCLA this time? I'm guessing he'll be there an entire eight months before he announces he's transferring again. Where will he move onto next?

I don't know, but that's the fun part about playing "Where In The World Will Brandon Willis Transfer To Next." You never really know where, just that he won't be there very long.

DT Brandon Willis transferring from UNC, again

Posted by Chip Patterson

After a turbulent offseason that ended with the dismissal of head coach Butch Davis, North Carolina opened their fall training camp on Friday in Chapel Hill. When it came time for the players to report Friday morning for team photos, there were a few faces from the media guide missing.

The most notable name was defensive tackle Brandon Willis. Willis, a redshirt freshman, signed his Letter of Intent in February 2010 before requesting a transfer to UCLA due to family issues in August. Then in March 2011, Willis was granted a release from his UCLA scholarship so he could return to the Tar Heels. On Friday, the school announced that the defensive tackle has decided to transfer again.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive lineman was considered one of the top recruits in North Carolina's 2010 class, but his inability to stay in one place has not allowed him to showcase his talents on the field. No reason was given this departure, and it is unknown where Willis might be headed next.

Interim head coach Everett Withers also announced the departure of cornerback Mywan Jackson. Jackson's exit is unrelated to football, as it appears he will be taking some time away from school as well.

"Mywan is working through some personal issues right now with his family and he felt it was in the best interest to stay in Florida until he decides where to continue his education," said Withers. "He indicated he would like to attend a school closer to his home and we support his decision. I wish him nothing but the best."

Jackson started five games in 2010, totaling 20 tackles on the season. He, along with several other members of the secondary, saw early action while North Carolina sat Charles Brown, Kendric Burney, and Deunta Williams in the midst of the NCAA investigation.

Brandon Willis is officially a Tar Heel, again

Posted by Tom Fornelli

Brandon Willis was originally a member of North Carolina's 2010 recruiting class, but only after originally committing to Tennessee and changing his mind when Lane Kiffin left for USC. After losing his mother while still in high school, Willis' father lost his job and found a new one in southern California. Not wanting to be separated from his father after losing his mother, Willis announced last August that he was leaving North Carolina to transfer to UCLA.

Then, seven days ago, Willis announced he was leaving UCLA. This time his grandmother is ailing, and once again Brandon is on the move. While it's been rumored for a week now, North Carolina made it official with a release on Monday saying that Willis was returning to Chapel Hill.

“Brandon lost his mother in high school and is very close with his grandmother, who lives in Burlington and is battling health issues,” head coach Butch Davis said in a statement. “He and his father wanted to move back to the East coast to be with her.  There were no hard feelings when Brandon originally left and when he inquired about the possibility of returning, we welcomed him back.”

Of course, since Willis transferred last season, he had to sit out the entire 2010 season. Now that he's transferring again, he may have to sit out a second straight year. North Carolina will submit a waiver to the NCAA asking to grant Willis immediate eligibility, and given the nature of his latest transfer, there's a chance that the NCAA will allow it.

Report: UCLA DT returning to North Carolina

Posted by Chip Patterson

Highly touted defensive tackle Brandon Willis has made more headlines than most of the Class of 2010, and he has yet to play a snap. Multiple media outlets, including the Los Angeles Daily News and InsideCarolina.com, are reporting that the Tar Heel transfer has been given his release from UCLA, and will be returning to North Carolina.

“My grandmother (is very ill),” Willis told Inside Carolina on Monday. “So everybody is trying to get as close as possible to be near her. “I wouldn’t go to any other school except for UNC, because I have a good relationship with Coach Butch Davis.”

Willis originally was a verbal commitment to Tennessee with plans to enroll in January 2010. But when Lane Kiffin bolted for Southern California, Davis and Co. convinced Willis his place would be at UNC. However, his father's unemployment situation forced a move to California - and prompted the hasty transfer to UCLA.

Now, with his grandmother in poor health, the entire family plans to relocate back to the Carolinas. When his father's employment forced the move to UCLA, Willis left North Carolina on good terms with Butch Davis. Now, that relationship will pay off in another talented body on the defensive line.

Willis is applying for an NCAA waiver to allow him to play right away, due to the circumstantial situation. Whether the waiver is granted or not, Willis plans to enroll back into UNC for the first summer session in May.
