Clemson loses staring OL to shoulder surgery

Posted by Chip Patterson

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris has been frustrated with the lack of physicality on the offensive line. The unit will need as much physical play as they can get, particularly after losing senior guard David Smith to a shoulder injury.

CBSSports.com's Travis Sawchik reports that Smith will have arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder and has been ruled out for Saturday, when Clemson welcomes Auburn to Death Valley. Smith, who has started every game since the beginning of the 2010 season, will be replaced by Mason Cloy. The school has given no timeline for Smith's return.

Clemson will be looking for revenge after Auburn escaped with a 23-20 overtime win in 2010. The game was a breakout moment in the season for an athletic junior college transfer named Cam Newton (you might have heard of him) and helped continue what has now become a 17-game winning streak. Gene Chizik's squad has taken on the role of a team that "finds a way to win," as evident by their close victories over Utah State and Mississippi State. Clemson has their own streak they are trying to break against Auburn, who has taken the last 14 from the Orange-clad Tigers.
