BB gun gets Iowa State RB suspended

Posted by Tom Fornelli

It's a tale as old as time. Football coaches and others in authority positions are always making sure to let their players know that nothing good ever happens at 3 a.m. -- which is true for the most part. You never see a story in the newspaper with the headline "Running back saves 15 toddlers from a flaming schoolbus at 3 a.m." It's always somebody getting arrested.

Odds which only increase when you add a BB gun to the equation and decide to start shooting things around campus. Which is what Iowa State RB DeVondrick Nealy was arrested for on Sunday morning and charged with harassment of a public official, according to GoCyclones.com. Now the university has announced Nealy is suspended indefinitely from the team.

An officer was summoned to the corner of Stange Road and Pammel Drive at 2:39 a.m. because a group was carrying a weapon and shooting things on campus, according to a police report.

Nealy was told to get and stay on the ground by an officer, but when the officer went to assist a fellow policeman Nealy got up and started walking north on Stange. A BB gun was found on Nealy.

Well, at least it wasn't a real gun.

Nealy is an incoming freshman and is part of Iowa State's latest recruiting class. He rushed for 2,743 yards and 39 touchdowns as a high school senior at Jefferson County in Monticello, Florida last season. He's the second running back to be suspended at Iowa State in the last week, as the school suspended Duran Hollis after he was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
