Doug Williams is Grambling's new head coach

Posted by Tom Fornelli

If at first you do succeed, try, try again.

When Eddie Robinson finally stepped down as Grambling's head coach, he was replaced by Doug Williams in 1998. Williams would then lead Grambling to three straight SWAC conference titles from 2000 to 2002 before leaving the job to take a position in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers front office.

Williams, the MVP of Super Bowl XXII, stayed with Tampa Bay until last year before becoming the general manager of the UFL's Virginia Destroyers franchise. Well, it seems that being a general manager in the UFL wasn't all that much fun for Williams, as he's now decided he'd rather return to Grambling to be the school's head coach once again.

“I was looking forward to working with the Destroyers, but this is a great opportunity for me and it is very rare that a father gets to coach his son at the college football level,” Williams said. “ I went to school there, I coached there, and now I have a great opportunity to coach there again.

“I will keep tabs on the Destroyers and know they are going to do well.  They have a great fan base in an area that is a football hotbed and the UFL will succeed there.”

Another factor in this decision for Williams? His son Doug Williams Jr. is currently a member of the Grambling football team.
