VT WR Dyrell Roberts (arm) likely out for 2011

Posted by Chip Patterson

Virginia Tech's passing game took a hit on Saturday, with wide receiver Dyrell Roberts breaking his arm on the opening kickoff against Arkansas State. According to the school, Roberts underwent surgery on Sunday and is "probably out for the rest of the year."

The senior from Smithfield, VA caught three passes for 45 yards in the season opener against Appalachian State, and has seen the field as a third or fourth receiver every season since arriving in Blacksburg. While rarely being a first target for Hokie quarterbacks, Roberts provided experience and depth to the passing game, still working out the kinks with sophomore quarterback Logan Thomas.

At this point in the season, Roberts is still eligible to redshirt and preserve one more year of eligibility. The school made a note of it in their release, and it seems that is the plan of action moving forward.

The Hokies are undefeated, but their passing game currently ranks next-to-last in the ACC. Against Arkansas State Thomas made noticeable improvements with his reads and comfort distributing the ball, but there were still lapses in decision making - two of which resulted in interceptions.

The Hokies will travel west to face Marshall this weekend before kicking off their conference schedule. The Hokies have been criticized for a soft non-conference slate, but they will be forced to prove their worth early against Clemson, Miami, and at a high-octane Wake Forest team in the first three weeks of October.
