NC State's front seven figures to be one of the strengths of the defensive unit this season, but they lost a key component losing J.R. Sweezy to a foot injury.
The school announced on Sunday that the senior defensive tackle underwent surgery to repair a foot fracture, and is expected to miss six weeks of action. Sweezy, a team captain and 2010 All-ACC Honorable Mention, is arguably one of the most important returning starters for the Wolfpack. His injury will hold him out of N.C. State's first four games, against Liberty, Wake Forest, South Alabama, and a Thursday night road game against Cincinnati.
Sweezy recorded 13 tackles for losses and six sacks in 2010, he will likely be replaced by junior Brian Slay or redshirt freshman Thomas Teal. Teal reportedly put together a strong spring, while Slay saw 12 games of action in 2010 and recorded 20 tackles. It will be an early test on N.C. State's depth on the line, but thankfully the schedule works out so Sweezy's absence shouldn't hurt the Wolfpack too much.
