Safety Green latest roster casualty at Alabama

Posted by Jerry Hinnen

Another player has departed the Alabama roster, Nick Saban announced today, but this one doesn't come as anything of a surprise.

Senior safety Robby Green was officially dismissed by the Crimson Tide this afternoon, ending a tumultuous career that saw the New Orleans product start six games as a sophomore but then miss the entire 2010 season through NCAA suspension. After being suspended again (this time by Saban himself) this past spring, few expected Green to ever see the field again for the Tide; today's announcement simply made those expectations official.

With only one year of eligibility remaining -- his missed season through suspension does not count as a redshirt -- Green may be forced to transfer outside the FBS to continue his playing career.

Saban also announced that two players, redshirt freshman receiver Keiwone Malone and redshirt sophomore defensive end Darrington Sentimore, had been suspended indefinitely for the ubiquitous "violation of team rules." The Tuscaloosa News reported last week that Sentimore was already exploring transfer options and would be leaving the roster shortly.

Green is the fifth Alabama player to officially depart the Tide program this offseason (following B.J. Scott, Corey Grant, Demetrius Goode and Petey Smith), with Sentimore and fellow defensive lineman Brandon Moore (widely expected to be transferring to community college) likely the sixth and seventh. More could be on the way, too; based on the class-by-class breakdown of the Tide's roster here, Alabama may still have as many as 89 scholarship players* before expected medical redshirts for players like Kerry Murphy and Kendall Kelly.

*18 seniors, 17 juniors, 20 sophomores, 13 redshirt freshmen and 21 true freshmen, assuming Moore and Sentimore are gone and the original post is accurate.

Alabama suspends Brandon Moore

Posted by Tom Fornelli

Alabama faces the not-so-easy task of replacing behemoth Marcell Dareus on its defensive line in 2011, and so far spring practice isn't doing much to help the Tide find a replacement. Last week Kerry Murphy suffered a knee injury that will cost him the chance to play and compete this spring, and on Saturday night Nick Saban announced another defensive lineman will be on the sidelines for a while.

Saban told reporters on Saturday night that defensive end Brandon Moore has been suspended indefinitely for that old standby, a violation of team rules and policy. Saban didn't make it sound like Moore would be back within a couple of days, either.

"That's indefinite," said the coach. "We don't know what's happening there."

Moore isn't the first member of the Tide defense to be suspended this spring, as cornerback Robby Green was suspended last Monday for violating team rules as well.

Moore played in four games as a freshman in 2010, making three tackles.
