The start of the Al Golden era at Miami has been shaky and plagued with inconsistencies. Moments of greatness and potential seem to be met with setbacks at every turn. The defense is the victim of the latest piece of bad news out of Coral Gables, with the announcement that linebacker Ramon Buchanan will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Buchanan sustained the injury in the first quarter of the Hurricanes' win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Golden had no official report after the game, but the senior linebacker was on crutches during the second half of the 45-14 victory.
The Palm Bay native has started every game this season, and is sixth on the team in total tackles. The combination of suspensions and injuries have kept the personnel combinations in constant rotation. Buchanan is eligible to apply for a medical hardship waiver that would allow him to return to the team for a fifth year.
The 2-2 Hurricanes (0-1 ACC) will return to conference play this week with a trip to Blackburg to face No. 21 Virginia Tech. The game has huge implications for both teams in the Coastal Division, with Georgia Tech appearing to pull away as the new frontrunner.
