Illinois has hired Toledo's Tim Beckman to replace Ron Zook as head football coach, according to the Associated Press.
An AP source at the the University of Toledo confirmed that Beckman told his players on Friday that he has accepted the recently-vacated Illini job. Zook was fired after Illinois's 6-0 start finished with a six-game losing streak and berth to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl against UCLA.
Toledo was Beckman's first stop as a head coach after serving as an assistant at Bowling Green, Ohio State, and Oklahoma State - where he was defensive coordinator from 2007-2008. In three seasons with the Rockets Beckman has compiled a 21-16 record and two straight bowl bids. Toledo (8-4) is slated to play Air Force in the Military Bowl, Beckman is not expected to coach that game.
Illinois is reportedly expected to hold a press conference this afternoon to introduce Beckman as the new head football coach.
