Syracuse starting safety Phillip Thomas has been suspended from the football team for undisclosed reasons, according to local reports.
Both The Post-Standard and 1260 The Score in Syracuse are reporting that the star safety is in jeopardy of missing as much as the rest of the season due to an unknown violation. Thomas leads the team in tackles (82) and ranks first in the conference with six interceptions. Syracuse is off this weekend, returning to action Nov. 26 against Cincinnati for the final game in the Carrier Dome.
The Orange have had an up and down season, but still are in contention for bowl eligibility at 5-5. After stunning West Virginia 49-23 at home, the Orange of slipped into a three game losing streak against league opponents. The defense, which was considered one of the best in the conference a year ago, now ranks last in the Big East giving up nearly 400 yards per game. The potential loss of Thomas, one of the few consistent performers on that unit, would be a huge blow for Syracuse.
