The celebration amongst Georgia fans this week following Mark Richt's "Dream Team" recruiting success will, unfortunately, be tempered after the school announced today that mascot UGA VIII has passed away , the second UGA to pass away in the past three seasons.
UGA VIII was only 17 months old, having been born in Sept. of 2009, and had served as Georgia's official mascot for only six regular season games (compiling a record of 4-2). But he was diagnosed with lymphoma earlier this year, and will now pass the baton back to "Russ," the interim mascot who served on the sidelines at the close of the 2009 season (following the death of UGA VII) and the first six games of 2010.
Like all UGAs, UGA VIII was a white male English bulldog owned by the Frank W. "Sonny" Seiler family, who has bred the UGAs in a continuous line for the past 50 years. There is no current timetable for naming a replacement.
