UCLA WON. Rick Neuheisel and the Bruins had their backs against the wall, with plenty of fans and media members already talking about potential replacements for the head coach. No worries, they took a lead into halftime and came back to score a go ahead touchdown in the final minute of a thrilling victory at the Rose Bowl.
WHY UCLA WON: Quarterback Kevin Price was very efficient and made plays with his arm and his legs. He finished the night 11-of-17 with a touchdown and no interceptions and kept it when needed out of the Pistol offense for 61 yards on the ground. Derrick Coleman rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns while the defense played the best they have all year despite allowing a few yards to the Sun Devils' offense.
WHEN UCLA WON: Arizona State had the lead thanks to Brock Osweiler's one-yard touchdown run but failed to get the two-point conversion thanks to a holding call. UCLA used the clock and the ground game well to go 65 yards in 11 plays to take 5:05 off the clock before Coleman punched it in for a touchdown. The defense held on just enough and Alex Garoutte missed a 46 yarder that would have won it.
WHAT UCLA WON: Who controls their own destiny in the Pac-12 South? That would be the Bruins, who will play an improving Utah team next week but are in line for a berth in the first ever championship game at the winner of next week's Oregon/Stanford game.
WHAT ARIZONA STATE LOST: This was supposed to be the year. A veteran group looked like they were finally living up to expectations and all set to play in the Pac-12 title game. Yet it seems like Dennis Erickson has had at least one game like this one, one they should win on the road but don't, every year. They're going to need some help to get to Palo Alto or Eugene.
THAT WAS CRAZY: After the game, a jubilant Neuheisel said," We said we were going to burn the ships. We're on the island and we're going to fight our way off of it." One of the rare Hernán Cortés references you'll hear post-game.
