2011 D1 Tournament 16 Teams 11 AQ Conferences

If there are going to be automatic qualifying conferences and automatic qualifing teams (Notre Dame) then  a playoff for DI college football should have all 11 conferences (holding at 11 by a thread) should have a automatic bid.  Here is my 16 team D1 playoff tournament.  I am not using the BCS rankings because I want them to consider quality wins (RPI style)  way more than the current system.

1.  LSU  (1) Sec Champ    16. La.Tech  (39)WAC Champ
8.  Kansas St  (8) At Large  9. Wisconsin  (10) B 10 Champ

4. Arkansas(4) At Large    13. S. Miss(23) Conf USA Champ
5. Oregon  (5) P 10 Champ    12.  West V  (22) Big East Champ

3. Alabama(2) At Large  14.ArkSt (34)  Sun Belt Champ
6.Stanford   At Large    11.  TCU (18) MW  Champ

7.  Boise St. At Large  10.Clemson (19)   ACC Champ
2. Ok State  (2)  B 12 Champion  15. N. Illinois(35 )MAC Champ

There is no limit on the number of At Large teams per conference. South Carolina(8) is the best team left out of the tournament.

If you want an 8 team no automatic bids playoff then you would get the top 8 seeds.  That would be the Sec Champ, B12 Champ, P 12 Champ and 5 at large team.   Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and Houston all played their way out in the last weekend, almost every game matters with only 5 at large spots.

I tweaked the rankings from the Palm pre BCS rankings in ( ) to reward head to head victories and Conference Championships.    I flipped OK St and Alabama, Oregon and Stanford, Kansas St and S Carolina for Strength of Schedule,  Clemson and TCU to avoid an all Mountain W first round game with Boise St .

I would really like to watch some of these games, sadly we never will watch the 2011 D1 Playoff.

2011 NCAA D1 Playoff - Thanksgiving Day

If there are going to be automatic qualifying conferences and automatic qualifing teams (Notre Dame) then  a playoff for DI college football should have all 11 conferences (holding at 11 by a thread) should have a automatic bid.  Here is my 16 team D1 playoff tournament if the season ended today.  I am using the currentBCSrankings, not because I like them, actually I want them to consider quality wins way more than the current system.

1.  LSU  (1) Sec Champ    16. La.Tech  (56)WACChamp
8.  Houston CUSA Champ  (8)   9. Oklahoma  (9)At Large

4.Arkansas(3) At Large    13. West Virginia(22) Big East Champ
5. Stanford  (5) At Large    12.  TCU  (20) M West Champ

3. Oklahoma St(4) B12 Champ  14.ArkSt (35)  Sun Belt Champ
6.Va.Tech  ACC Champ    11.  Michigan St  (14) Big 10 Champ

7.  Boise St. At Large  10.Oregon(10)  P12 Champ
2. Alabama  (2)  At Large  15. N. Illinois(36)MACChamp

There is no limit on the number of At Large teams per conference. Kansas St (11) andSouth Carolina(12) were two best teams left out. They are higher ranked than the Big 10, Big East, Sun Belt,MACandWAC.   After the remaining games the teams will change.

If you want an 8 team no automatic bids playoff then you would get the top 8 seeds.  That would be the Sec Champ, B12 Champ, Conf USA and ACC Champ and 4 at large teams including Stanford and Boise St who are higher ranked that the teams that will win the League.

Preseason 16 Team NCAA D1 Playoff

I have been wanting an NCAA playoff for a while, I believe the best format is the one that exists for many years for DIII, DII, and DIAA (DI Championship Division)

My PreSeason 16 Team National Championship DI Tournament (which I hope happens some day) Using the CBS Sports Preseason Conf predicitoins to get conference champs and the AP Preseason poll for seeding I have created what I believe a Tournament should look like with 11 conference champions and 5 at large teams. I will not comment on the logic behind who was picked 1st and sometimes 2nd by CBS Sports except to say 7 of the top 8 conferences they had the team that won it last year winning again.

#1 Alabama vs #16 Middle Tenn St
#8 Nebraksa vs #9 VA Tech

#5 Texas vs #12 Wisconsin
#4 Florida vs #13 Iowa

#3 Boise St vs #14 Houston
#6 TCU vs #11 Pittsburg

#7 Oklahoma vs #10 Oregon
#2 Ohio St vs #15 Temple

Iowa got the last at large berth because CBS sports picked Wisonsin 2nd in the Big 10 even tough the AP had Iowa ranked higer. USC is not eligable because of NCAA violations. Miami, Fla would be the best team left out, I do have 2 at large teams from the B12 and B10 and only one from the SEC because that is how the AP ranks them, not how I feel they would finish. I would like to see this tournament but we will not see it this year, I doubt all the higher seed teams would win, that is for sure and there would be some great football. Who would win? We will never know for sure.

I do want to reward Miami. FL because they play the most ranked teams and probably the toughest out of conference schedule in the country, #2 Ohio St, #15 Pittsburg, and USF plus 4 ranked ACC schools, and if they are ranked #13 after that schedule, they probably only have two losses and might make it.
