Thad Matta recruits assistant from NBA

By Jeff Goodman

Yet another sign that Thad Matta can really recruit.

He just pulled Chris Jent from the NBA.

Sure, Jent is an Ohio State alum – and yes, there is an NBA lockout looming.

However, few figured that Jent – who interviewed for a head job this past summer – would bolt his gig as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavs to be a college assistant.

"No way he goes there,” one person in the Cleveland Cavs organization told me just days after Brandon Miller resigned to create the spot on Matta’s staff.”

Again, Matta can recruit.

This is a guy who continues to bring in high-level talent to Columbus, whether it’s Greg Oden and Mike Conley, Jared Sullinger or even the hightly touted big men that didn’t make it: B.J. Mullens and Kosta Koufos.

Jent graduated from Ohio State in 1992, had a 10-year pro career (two seasons in the NBA) and became an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2003. He was then an assistant with the Orlando Magic in 2004-05 before being named the interim head coach for the final 18 games.

Jent joined Cleveland in 2006 as the director of player development and was promoted to an assistant in 2009.
