Michigan get commitment number one for 2012

Michigan is on the board for the class of 2012.

Rockford (Mich.) offensive tackle Ben Braden made the news official late Thursday night, verbally committing to the Wolverines.

"I really like the coaching staff," Branden told Scout.com. "Brady Hoke is definitely a very stand up guy. He's a players coach. He really looks out for his guys and that's something I didn't feel as strong as with the other guys."

The 6-foot-6, 280 pound tackle also held scholarship offers from Michigan State, Syracuse and Wisconsin. The reason Michigan received Braden's pledge was mainly due to offensive line coach Darrell Funk, who has served under Hoke since his days at Ball State.

"Coach Funk is definitely laid back, but he's also somebody I think I can kind of relate to," Branden said. "The way he likes to run his offense; it's power stuff and that's what I like. My impression is I'll be playing tackle, but I'm not really sure."

Michigan signed just two offensive linemen in the previous year's class, which was signed under the difficult circumstances of a coaching change. The proximity to home and the feeling Branden had when visiting Ann Arbor was a bigger factor in his commitment than early playing time however.

"It really reminded me of Rockford and I really like the campus," he said. "I feel at home when I'm there."
