Gator four-star signee McRoy transfers to Tx Tech

Posted by Jerry Hinnen

For Tommy Tuberville and Texas Tech, an impressive Signing Day haul has turning into an impressive Signing Spring haul as prospects around in the country have turned towards Lubbock after electing to leave their original destinations.

Per Red Raider Sports, Lakeland (Fla.) wide receiver Javares McRoy has asked for his release from Florida (one the Gators have granted) with the intent of transferring to Tech. A consensus four-star prospect who Maxpreps' Tom Lemming ranked the No. 24 wide receiver in the class of 2011 , McRoy is the second major catch for the Red Raiders in two days; just yesterday, Pennsylvania top-10 defensive tackle Delvon Simmons (who asked for a release from North Carolina after his defensive line coach left the Tar Heels) announced he would also be attending Texas Tech.

As for McRoy, he originally committed to Tech back in early 2010, following in the footsteps of his brother Ben McRoy, a sophomore running back for the Red Raiders. But he later switched his commitment to the Gators, stuck with it even after the hire of Will Muschamp, and enrolled early in Gainesville to go through spring drills.

But apparently those spring workouts under Muschamp and Charlie Weis didn't go smoothly, and with his brother already there and his preexisting familiarity with the Red Raider coaching staff, Lubbock was a natural landing spot.

And so at week's end, what was already one of the best 2011 classes in the Big 12 has gotten much, much better. (And what was already a somewhat underwhelming first effort for Muschamp -- by Gator standards, anyway -- has gotten a little bit more underwhelming.)

Simmons selects Texas Tech

Posted by Bryan Fischer

One of the last pieces in the class of 2011 has finally found a home.

Former North Carolina signee, McKeesport (Pa.) defensive tackle Delvon Simmons has selected Texas Tech after asking for - and was granted - his release following the departure of Tar Heels' defensive line coach Brian Baker less than a week after Signing Day.

The 6-foot-5, 270 pound Simmons was considering USC, Pitt, Auburn and Oregon before finally selecting Texas Tech, according to Chris Level of RedRaiderSports.com.

Simmons was one of the top defensive tackles in the country, ranked as the 8th best in the nation by CBSSports/MaxPreps analyst Tom Lemming.

The four-star player joins high school teammate Branden Jackson, a defensive end, as part of the Red Raiders' class of 2011. Because the signing period is over, Simmons can only sign financial aid papers with the school. As a result, Simmons can still be recruited by schools so it might be a few more months before he actually enrolls before Tech fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Simmons gets release from North Carolina

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Class of 2011 defensive tackle Delvon Simmons has received his release from North Carolina, his high school coach Jim Ward confirmed to RedRaiderSports.com.

Simmons, who surprisingly signed with the Tar Heels on Signing Day despite not taking an official visit to the school, asked for his release following the departure of line coach Brian Baker. Baker was on staff for only a month before returning to the NFL to become an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys.

Though it is not known if Simmons was given an unconditional release or released to a specific set of schools, sources told CBSSports.com that Texas Tech and USC would pursue the talented defensive tackle and are considered the favorites to land him.

Simmons was MaxPreps' eighth-ranked defensive tackle for the class of 2011.

Delvon Simmons gets release from UNC

Posted by Bryan Fischer

MaxPreps eighth-ranked defensive tackle Delvon Simmons has been released from his letter of intent, North Carolina head coach Butch Davis confirmed to CarolinaBlue.com.

Simmons surprisingly chose the Tar Heels on Signing Day despite never taking an official visit to the school. The 6-foot-5, 265 pound defensive tackle asked for his release following the departure of line coach Brian Baker, who was only on staff for a month. Baker followed Charlie Coiner, who filled in following the departure of disgraced assistant John Blake.

According to Scout.com, Simmons listed USC, Pitt, Texas Tech, Iowa, Oregon, Florida and Rutgers as schools he would like to be released to. He is expected to choose between Texas Tech or USC.

News is not all bad in Chapel Hill however, as former North Carolina defensive tackle Brandon Willis rejoined the team on Monday following a transfer to UCLA.

Delvon Simmons shocks schools with UNC commitment

Posted by Chip Patterson

Delvon Simmons , the No. 8 defensive tackle in the nation according to MaxPreps.com , took official visits to Oregon , Rutgers , Texas Tech , and was in Los Angeles visiting USC over the weekend.  As one of the top recruits in the state of Pennsylvania, Pittsbugh also entered National Signing Day figuring they had a shot to land Simmons.

So it came as a pleasant surprise to North Carolina when Simmons signed his letter of intent to join the Tar Heels in 2011.  With Phillip Dukes committing to South Carolina, Simmons is able to give head coach Butch Davis a big-time signee on the defensive line.  Simmons will be one of the first recruits under the tenure of defensive line coach Brian Baker , formerly with the Carolina Panthers .  Baker fills the position formerly held by John Blake , who resigned from the program due to allegations associated with the ongoing NCAA investigation in Chapel Hill.
