Recruiting updates are coming fast and furious as the final weekend before Signing Day winds down. Monday is the beginning of a “dead” period where coaches can only talk to recruits if they call them so things are jumping the past few hours.
The biggest news might be Lauderdale Lakes (FL) linebacker Kent Turene decommitting from USC. Turene had waivered on the Trojans since taking visits and most thought it was 50-50 for him to actually sign with USC. Georgia might be the leader after he recently took an official visit there.
Arizona State also lost a commit this weekend with Oaks Christian (CA) defensive end Dillon van der Wal flipping to Vanderbilt. Van der Wal is a very solid player and a good pickup for the Commodores. His decommitment is the second big blow of the weekend for the Sun Devils after in-state guard Cyrus Hobbi selected USC. News isn’t all bad for Dennis Erickson’s team, they did pick up defensive tackle David Moala from Gardena (CA).
Orlando (FL) linebacker LaQuentin Smith has narrowed his choices down to Pittsburgh and West Virginia. This would be a big pickup for Pitt head coach Todd Graham, who has reeled in six commitments in the past 48 hours after seeing most of the recruiting class dissolve in the wake of the coaching change.
