Anthony Alford picks Southern Miss at Army Bowl

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- One of the more intriguing prospects at the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl was Petal (Miss.) quarterback Anthony Alford. A multi-sport athlete, he showed off his arm and his athleticism Saturday afternoon at the Alamodome before committing to Southern Miss during a break in the action on national television.

"I'm going to stay home close to my family and go to Southern Mississippi," Alford said.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound signal-caller is also a standout baseball player and considered other in-state schools Ole Miss and Mississippi State. He's a great pick up for new head coach Ellis Johnson and could provide an option right away for the offense.

"If he sticks with football he certainly shows the ability to become an All-American at the college level," analyst Tom Lemming said. "Shows a super strong arm, can make every throw, has knowledge of the game, is a leader both on and off the field, and combines strength, explosive moves, great vision, and tremendous instincts. Over the past year he turned from just being a great athlete into a premier QB."

The four-star is the fifth-best dual-threat quarterback and is ranked as the 84th overall player in the class of 2012 according to MaxPreps. Alford passed for 2,058 yards and rushed for 1,731 while scoring 44 touchdowns during his senior season.
