23 DE Javonte Magee B Call it the RGIII bounce but Baylor definitely improved upon what they've been doing on the recruiting trail, landing the talented Magee and several athletes that will improve the overall team speed.

- Commitment list
21 QB Grant Rohach C This is a pretty tall group coming in that is heavy on the lines and at wide out but the marquee guy is Rohach. There are a few underrated players here but it's not what you'd call a special class.
- Team page
- Commitment list
16 DB Greg Allen F Well, Charlie Weis, you're in Kansas and not South Bend or Gainesville. This year was a recruiting class well below average and might not add much at all unless you count transfer quarterbacks Dayne Crist and Jake Heaps.
- Team page
- Commitment list
26 WR Marquez Clark C+ Not many of these guys, outside of the Jucos, are expected to play much early on but a decent effort this year for the Wildcats.
- Team page

24 WR Durron Neal A- They addressed the big need at wide receiver and brought in several other nice pieces on offense. This wasn't a class that drew on Texas for talent but was really all over the map but still pulled in a top 10 class.
- Team page
- Commitment list
22 QB Wes Lunt B The Cowboys aren't quite at the point where they're competing for elite talent on the recruiting trail yet but they're doing a great job of grabbing kids that will fit in their system on both sides of the ball.
- Team page
- Commitment list
23 QB Tyler Matthews B This could have been in 'A' territory had they managed to keep a few kids but it's still a very good effort for the first class they're able to sell playing in the Big 12.
- Team page
- Commitment list
28 RB Johnathan Gray A+ Once again, the Longhorns swept the elite in-state talent and landed the top RB in the country. They also grabbed some elite and underrated defenders to complete one of the better classes under Mack Brown.

- Commitment list
26 WR Dominique Wheeler B This is actually a pretty underrated class and the amount of Jucos is certainly interesting but when you consider needs, understandable.

Big 12 Signing Day Overview

Posted by Bryan Fischer

National Signing Day is almost here and recruits across the country are gearing up for plenty of last-minute pitches and school visits as head coaches look to shape their program for years to come. The Big 12 is once again led by traditional powers Texas and Oklahoma but after that, it's not the drop off that other conferences have with a solid effort by just about every other school. Drawing on the talent-rich state of Texas makes recruiting easier than most but it's interesting to note how schools are developing other pipelines (such as the Sooners and California). The make up and look of the league is different and that makes this Signing Day particularly interesting down in the Big 12.

MaxPreps.com Top 25 Team Rankings, Big 12
College Commits Top 100 Moving
2. Texas 24 5
7. Oklahoma 16 4
24. TCU 20 0

Top storylines

1. Does Texas finish number one?

Mack Brown doesn't have the nickname of Mr. February for nothing, as the long-time head coach can certainly recruit. 2012 might be one of the most talented classes he' brought in during his time on the 40 acres, reeling in the state's top running back for the second year in a row, the top wide receiver, some talented front seven athletes and several offensive lineman who might be playing sooner rather than later. The Longhorns are in the running for a handful of national prospects as Signing Day rolls around so it's possible the current group of 24 picks up another top 100 player to give them an impressive six. If so they have a chance to take the top spot from Alabama and/or hold off Michigan, Florida or Ohio State. It's not a big chance but the Horns have a chance nevertheless.

2. Can Oklahoma move into the top five?

This was supposed to be one of Bob Stoops' smaller classes and for a time it looked like he was taking his time building it up. But things have started to pick up and while it's not as flashy as the school's Red River rival to the South, it brings in several quality pieces along the line and at receiver. In the running for the overall number one recruit and a handful of other top 300 players means the Sooners have nowhere to go but up and might be able to crack the top five depending on who they land. If that happens, it would be a major coup for Stoops considering he lost a talented recruiter in Brent Venables and had to help brother Mike readjust to recruiting players back to Norman.

3. How much better is TCU's class with the Big 12 draw?

From the looks of it, Gary Patterson is bringing in one of his most talented recruiting classes during his tenure in Fort Worth. If the Horned Frogs can't compete in the Big 12, it won't be for lack of resources - brand new facilities should be open by the season - or lack of talent. The team was young last season but still wound up taking the Mountain West conference title and upsetting Boise State and they'll add several players with top-end speed to help fill-out the depth chart. There's more skill position talent for TCU than lineman this year so that will be interesting to note going forward but in landing players like tight end Griffin Gilbert or Elite 11 quarterback Tyler Matthews, Patterson has shown that the conference realignment shuffling has paid off for the school on the recruiting trail.

4. Why is everybody Juco crazy?

One sign that this is something to keep an eye on in the conference this year is the mere fact that Brown is bringing a pair of Jucos to Austin for the first time in a decade. Charlie Weis is hoping for a quick talent influx at Kansas by taking on a host of Jucos and at least two transfers at quarterback. Tommy Tuberville has an impressive eight guys from the junior college ranks headed to Lubbock and, of course, Bill Snyder is going to have plenty lining his recruiting class. As things stand right now, all but one school - TCU - will be bringing in two Jucos come Signing Day which is a bit unusual for the Big 12 as a whole and something to keep an eye out for. It will be interesting to hear the coaches give their press conferences to discuss recruits and give the reason why they dipped into the Juco ranks more than usual this year.

22 WR Kiante Griffin
RB Rashodrick Linwood

It definitely looks like the Bears experienced a little bounce from their remarkable season and back-to-back years of going to a bowl game. There's some very quick players in this group and Magee and Nance are absolute steals.

23 QB Grant Rohach

West and Rohach might be hooking up in the passing game a lot down the road as each are very good gets for the Cyclones. After that, there's a lot of 'we'll see.'

13 DB Greg Allen

Not included but it'd be remiss to not point out is the fact that Weis landed two solid quarterbacks in Dayne Crist and Jake Heaps this year. After that it remains to be see what kind of impact this group can have.

15 WR Marquez Clark

Clark and Davis might be able to play early but as usual for Kansas State, it might take a few games or years to assess what the 2012 group can do.

18 OL John Michael McGee
TE Taylor McNamara
WR Durron Neal
WR Derrick Woods
The offense reloads at receiver quite well and Neal has a chance to be a special playmaker with his talent. The offensive line also gets a nice boost with McGee and Ty Darlington in the interior.
- Team page

20 WR C.J. Curry
QB Wes Lunt
OL Michael Wilson
Curry could see plenty of early playing and looks like he's the latest in a long line of talented Cowboys receivers. The defensive players are all very solid with LB/DE Jeremiah Tshimanda a very intriguing player who can pass rush early on.
- Team page
- Commitment list
20 DE Devonte Fields
ATH Daje Johnson
QB Tyler Matthews
Very few teams in the country are bringing in as fast, collectively, a group as the Horned Frogs are. Johnson is a special talent and Matthews can take his time to develop into a nice signal-caller.
- Team page
- Commitment list
24 DT Malcom Brown
RB Johnathan Gray
WR Cayleb Jones
OL Curtis Riser
Just another ho-hum group of stars for the Longhorns. The class is highlighted by Gray, who set just about every record imaginable in high school and should be a factor early on in running the ball.
- Team page
- Commitment list
24 QB Clayton Nicholas
OL Michael Starts
WR Dominique Wheeler
Nichols is still a bit raw but is tough and has the tools to be a good quarterback in the Tech offense. Wheeler is a dynamic talent who easily has a chance to start early.

National Notes: Recruiting the recruited

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Three months. Three stress-filled, long months until Signing Day.

To complicate things, it's the stretch run of the season, the holidays and bowl game time. Coaches have to worry about filling out a recruiting class as well as keeping their current commitments from looking around. Surprise official or unofficial visits can sometimes throw staffs for a loop. It's a complicated time of numbers juggling, keeping kids happy and, oh yeah, coaching.

With all that in mind, here's a run down of the top commitments from the ACC, Big 12 and Big East that each school has to keep in the fold and sign in February.

ACC

Boston College: Steven Daniels, linebacker. He signed with the Eagles last year but didn't qualify and could be looking around, they need the tackling machine quickly.

Clemson: Travis Blanks, defensive back. One of the top defensive backs on the East Coast, he can play right away with his coverage skills.

Florida State: Mario Edwards, defensive end. They've got a great defensive line class but no one like Edwards, who is strongly considering Oklahoma.

Maryland: Mike Madaras, offensive linemen. A local kid from a power conference at an area of need, the staff has burned some bridges locally and making sure Madaras stays in the fold is big.

N.C. State: K'Hadree Hooker, defensive tackle. The staff is on shaky ground but they'd be wise to keep the in-state DT.

Wake Forest: Jared Crump, wide receiver. 6-foot-3, 4.5 receivers don't grow on trees nor come from Florida to the Triangle often.

Duke: Deion Williams, linebacker. He's a tad undersized but a great cross-country get for the Blue Devils.

Georgia Tech: Tyler Stargel, linebacker. Would be a big interior presence with his size.

Miami: Jelani Hamilton, defensive end. One of the top players in the area, keeping him home would do wonders for the rest of the class.

North Carolina: Patton Robinette, quarterback. The Elite 11 signal-caller has already taken a few visits elsewhere.

Virginia: Kwontie Moore, linebacker. The complete package, he'd be a much-needed upgrade on defense.

Virginia Tech: Jarontay Jones, defensive end. One of the top players in Georgia, it's possible he could pull a late switch.

Big 12

Baylor: Kiante' Griffin, athlete. Could come in and play on either side of the ball.

Iowa State: Grant Rohach, quarterback. It's not too often ISU gets a quarterback like Rohach out of California.

Kansas: Brian Beckmann, offensive lineman. Big body like Beckmann is someone they must have to build around.

Kansas State: Aderius Epps, offensive lineman. See above.

Missouri: Jonathan Williams, running back. Henry Josey has done a great job and Williams is that type of player.

Oklahoma: Polo Manukainiu, defensive end. He's already a shaky commitment and is taking visits elsewhere.

Oklahoma State: Kendall Sanders, athlete. He would be a great fit for the Cowboys.

Texas: Johnathan Gray, running back. He's pretty solidly committed but that still doesn't mean you stop recruiting #1 RB in the country.

Texas Tech: Dominique Wheeler, wide receiver. He should play early with his speed.

TCU: Daje Johnson, defensive back. You need defensive backs in the Big 12 and Johnson is one of the fastest in Texas.

Big East

Cincinnati: Dennis Norfleet
, running back. He's small but he's dynamic in space a great fit for the offense.

Connecticut: Casey Cochran
, quarterback. Grabbing the best in-state player is always a good start for a new head coach.

Louisville: Larry Jefferson,
defensive end. He could provide a nice boost on either side of the ball.

Pittsburgh: Rushel Shell
, running back. He was likely to end up at Pitt all along but they need to keep the five-star happy.

Rutgers: Leonte Carroo,
wide receiver. One of the top players in the state, he could help them with his Don Bosco teammates.

South Florida:
Chris Bivins, defensive back. One of the better corners in Northern Florida, one wonders if the Gators came in with a later offer.

Syracuse: Tashon Whitehurst,
linebacker. Not the fastest player, he's still a nice get from Florida at his position.

West Virginia: Deontay McManus
, wide receiver. He's a great fit in Dana Holgorsen's offense but the commitment isn't super strong.

Notre Dame sees Perkins decommit

First it was USC that saw a high-profile decommit and now the team they recently beat is suffering the same thing. South Bend (Ind.) linebacker David Perkins opened things up Monday, a loss for the Irish on the defensive side of the ball.

“There are a lot of good schools out there interested in me, and Notre Dame doesn’t let you take visits, and I want to take visits,” Perkins told 247Sports. “I feel like I committed too fast and didn’t give myself a chance to go through the whole recruiting process. I’m going to reopen it and go through the process and see what all is out there."

It's not unusual to hear this kind of thing from kids as we draw closer to Signing Day but interesting to hear it from a local player like Perkins. He has several programs such as LSU, Michigan State, Tennessee and Oregon that could be players if he doesn't keep Notre Dame in the mix.

The Irish have 15 commitments for 2012 as of now.

Video of the week

Here are some highlights of Texas commit Cayleb Jones, the second best wide receiver in the country and a five-star prospect.

Recruiting Roundup

Guito Ervilus has North Carolina as his leader after a visit.

Georgia Tech impressed a good number of recruits in their game against Clemson.

UCLA is the latest offer for running back Fabian Moreau.

Does playing Florida in Jacksonville hurt Georgia's recruiting?

Offenisve lineman Brandon Fanaika is interested in Arkansas.

Brian Kelly wants easier access to recruits.

Ranking the Big 12 Recruiting Classes

Posted by Bryan Fischer
1. Texas (Ranked #2 overall by MaxPreps)

It's no surprise to see the Longhorns occupy the top spot in the conference recruiting rankings and this year they have a particularly strong class. Mack Brown has collected five top 100 recruits, including the top running back and a wide receiver who happens to be the number three overall prospect.

2. Texas A&M (#6)

The Aggies have taken advantage of the turn around in College Station on the field with success on the recruiting trail. Quarterback Matt Davis and running back Trey Williams impressed over the summer and there are several explosive players on defense headed to Aggieland.

3. Oklahoma (#15)

A smaller class than normal when all is said and done, Bob Stoops has searched far and wide for some great talent. They managed to grab two top 100 players and several others who certainly could be in the final rankings.

4. Missouri (#16)

This class is a little under the radar with the top-heavy Big 12 rankings but it's a very solid class with some good players to build around. Running back Jonathan Williams is ranked in the top 100 and quarterback Maty Mauk is one of the most prolific high school passers in the country.

5. Texas Tech

Pretty impressive haul for Tommy Tuberville and company. Stealing offensive lineman Michael Starts out of Waco from several other teams was a coup and both lines will be restocked with this group.

6. Baylor

The Bears have a surprisingly big class at this point in the year with 18 commitments. Kiante Griffin is a terrific athlete who can play either wide receiver or defensive back and Thaddeus LaGrone is an athletic and rangy linebacker.

7. Oklahoma State

This class has seen some defections and Mike Gundy has finished bridesmaid to several prospects but this is still a solid, if small, group. There's plenty of time for this class to move up, especially if they can land legacy running back Barry Sanders Jr.

8. Iowa State

It's surprising to see such a diverse group headed to Ames with players from Florida to California to Texas. Grant Rohach could compete for the starting quarterback job early.

9. Kansas State

As one would expect, this class will eventually be made up of several junior college transfers so it's hard to figure out just how well the Wildcats are doing on the recruiting trail. Linebacker Will Davis is a good pick up though.

10. Kansas

One of the smallest classes in the country, the Jayhawks have work left to do. There's two quarterbacks so it looks like that need is filled and it's time to move on to others.
