Sooners land big offensive lineman

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is putting together another top 15 recruiting class, and his 2012 edition reached the double-digit commitment mark Wednesday night as the Sooners landed a verbal pledge from Texarkana (Texas) offensive lineman John Michael McGee.

“When I went up to Oklahoma for junior day in January, it felt like my home away from home," McGee told 247Sports.com. "My parents went with me way back when I visited and they both liked it, too. Oklahoma has a nice campus, they win championships, have what I’m looking for academically and can help me accomplish my goals."

The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder also held scholarship offers from Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma State and Clemson among others. The biggest reason he'll end up a Sooner, however, was the time and effort the coaching staff made in the recruiting process.

“They were the first to offer me and have been recruiting me the longest,” McGee said. “Coach (Josh) Heupel and Coach (James) Patton have come down to watch me as much as they can, including basketball games, and have shown how much they want me.”

McGee is the 10th commitment for Oklahoma's upcoming class and the fourth from the state of Texas. McGee could play either guard or tackle in college but will likely end up on the inside next to fellow 2012 offensive line commit Ty Darlington.

Sooners add big Florida center Ty Darlington

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Oklahoma has already raided the state of Florida for a tight end and the coaching staff went back to the state again this week and managed to grab a commitment from offensive lineman Ty Darlington out of Apopka (Fla.), one of the top offensive linemen from the Sunshine State.

"That sort of hit me last night when I called coach (James) Patton," Darlington told SoonerScoop.com on Thursday. "I got home real late because I had a baseball game I had to go to. Well when I got home my brothers and sisters have accumulated a lot of Oklahoma's gear and they had it on. I don't know if you knew but I'm the oldest of seven and they were all dressed up in their OU stuff, my mom was all excited. After I talked to coach Patton I called all my aunts and uncles, and my grandparents and let them know."

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound Darlington is one of the top interior linemen in the country and ranked 75th overall in the class of 2012 by MaxPreps. He held offers from Auburn, Florida State, LSU and Virginia Tech among others but his mother went to school at Oklahoma and the family ties were just too much to overcome.

"I definitely feel like I can get a great education at Oklahoma, at some other places, I felt like I had to give them a look," he said. "I've just been praying about it and realized I needed to follow my heart, and since I was a little kid I've wanted to go to Oklahoma and that's sort of been my dream, when God gives you that opportunity you need to accept it."

The second offensive line commit for the Sooners, Darlington is also the ninth commitment overall. He tight end Laith Harlow in going from Florida to Norman next fall.

The four-star's commitment marks a strong recruiting push for Oklahoma as he is the second top 100 player to commit to the school in as many weeks. Darlington will likely lineup at center when he first steps on campus.
