2/13 Recruiting Roundup

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Georgia might crack the top five for 2013's top prospect, Robert Nkemdiche.

Great story on Penn State signee Jamil Pollard, who has gone through quite a bit.

Texas shockingly had no commitments out of their Junior Day this weekend. They're going after several DFW area players though.

Athlete Juwaan Williams was offered by Georgia Tech.

Arizona State has jumped in with an offer for tight end Hunter Henry.

Offensive lineman David Dawson will visit Arkansas in the spring after getting an offer.

Defensive end Devin Washington plans on getting up to South Carolina during the spring.

- A complete list of the 2012 signees in the Pac-12.

24 RB Greg Garmon B- You're not blown away with this group but guys like Garmon will come in and play early. It's just not a deep class but some of the guys at the top are very nice grabs for the Hawkeyes.

- Commitment list
24 DB Terry Richardson A The Wolverines accomplished the two big things you want in bringing in guys that will add depth on top of several that will play right away. The defensive guys in particular looks like they're great fits in Greg Mattison's system and the OL group might be the best in the conference.

18 WR Aaron Burbridge B It lost its luster down the stretch with a notable decommit but this is a sneaky good class. Don't sleep on Tyler O'Connor taking over under center before too long.

29 QB Phillip Nelson C+ An interesting mix of guys in this class between Jucos that are hoping to come in and play right away and other players who might need a few years. Nelson could challenge for the starting QB spot early.

17 WR Jordan Westerkamp C Perhaps this was the first year where not playing in Texas hurt the Cornhuskers (despite two commits from there) because they appeared to be all over the map. Losing Andrus Peat, with his brother on the team, hurt.

21 DE Ifeadi Odenigbo B+ It's not too often the Wildcats are landing some high-end talent like Odenigbo or Malin Jones so kudos to the staff for identifying guys that fit the school well and can play.

21 DB TaJarvis Fuller C- The group held up surprisingly well considering the coaching turnover but it's not a particularly good group outside of a handful of guys. It's just a very average class.

24 LB Jacarri Alexander D It's not just losing Gunner Kiel but the lack of landing some immediate playmakers.

24 DE Noah Spence A+ There's a great argument to be made about this being the best DL group in 2012. Don't sleep on the offensive guys coming in for spot duty like Bri'onte Dunn either.

- Commitment list
19 TE Jesse James D+ Let's face it, this wasn't going to be a great class given all that has happened in State College. James is a nice player and Jamil Pollard is a Big Ten player but just hit the reset button this group.

- Commitment list
26 QB Austin Appleby C There were a few surprising gets in this class but nobody outside of Appleby that screamed that the Boilermakers did a great job.

11 LB Vince Biegel B The numbers hold back this class from a higher grade but there's definitely some quality players. More than that, each guy is a great fit for the offense/defense that the Badgers run.

Four commit at Offense-Defense Bowl

Posted by Bryan Fischer

It was a busy Thursday night for commitments at the Offense-Defense Bowl in Dallas, Texas. Four players committed to schools according to reports and each were major additions to their respective recruiting classes.

Westville (N.J.) defensive tackle Jamil Pollard was the first to put the hats on the table and picked up a Penn State one, according to multiple reports. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound interior presence makes up for the loss of Tommy Schutt to Ohio State earlier this month.

Pollard is ranked as the 10th best defensive tackle by MaxPreps in the class of 2012 and selected PSU over Boston College and also held offers from Alabama and Florida among others. He is the 14th commitment for Penn State's class of 2012.

"He shows enormous strength, burst off the ball, and an aggressive, take no prisoners style of play," analyst Tom Lemming said. "This young man never quits, never lets up, and he will chase until the whistle. He just fires off the snap and is an explosive violent tackler. He shows quick hands and surprising range for a 285 pounder. He's also considered a Division I prospect at the tackle position on offense but prefers to play DT."

That wasn't the only big lineman to commit at the game. Las Vegas (Nev.) offensive guard Cedrick Poutasi gave Utah's recruiting class a big boost when he committed to the Utes.

"This guy proves to be very explosive off the line and he's powerful, quick-footed, smart, and tough. Has a take no prisoners' attitude at the LT position and doesn't just like to block players, he likes to bury them," said Lemming. "He does a very good job of getting into position in both the run and pass game, sealing off defenders, and keeps his legs moving while he's finishing off his blocks. He runs exceptionally well for a 325 pounder and will do nothing but get better."

In a good year for linemen out West, Poutasi was one of the better interior linemen and is a notable pickup as the program continues to transition to the Pac-12. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound guard also held offers from Arizona, Oregon and Oklahoma State among others.

Poutasi is Utah's 17th commitment for the class of 2012 and sixth on the offensive line.

In addition, Lyndhurst (Ohio) tight end/defensive end Pharaoh Brown committed to Oregon.

"I was blown away by his pass rushing skills, instincts, and potential," said Lemming. "A tall, lengthy DE, he will gain 40 to 50 pounds over the next couple of years and develop into an All-American pass rusher. He's not yet there but he looks very good on junior film. He's as athletic as they come, can dunk a basketball with either hand, does a great job of playing off blocks, staying on his feet, and getting to the ball."

The 6-foot-7, 225-pound Brown was previously committed to Michigan but recently reopened his recruitment. Maxpreps ranks him as 25th in the class as a defensive end but he'll likely head to Eugene as the Ducks' second tight end in 2012.

Pleasant Grove (Utah) guard/tackle Brandon Fanaika continued the run of linemen committing at the game, pledging to Stanford over local school Utah State. The 6-foot-4, 310-pounder can play on either side of the ball for the Cardinal but will likely end up as an offensive guard.

"Shows very good feet, a passion for the game, and an aggressive style of play," said Lemming. "He performs very well at LT and OG and is exceptional at DT. He's one of those types of players with the attitude that he will not stay blocked. Shows exceptional initial quickness off the ball, strong hands, keeps his pads low, and knows how to split the double team. Very strong, he can dominate the point of attack and is known for his ability to stop everything up the middle."

Stanford is losing several offensive linemen so Fanaika will at the very least provide depth for the team. He is Stanford's 16th commit for the upcoming class and fourth to join the line.

Recruiting is a difficult task for Penn State

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Recruiting in and of itself is extremely difficult. The stakes are high, jobs are at risk and the payoff at the end might be one kid making one play years down the road to win a game. Add in the amount of time college football coaches spend on the trail - recruiting is not a sometimes thing, it is an all the time thing - and one quickly understands why plenty of coaches will privately say that what they do leading up to Signing Day is one of their least favorite things about the job.

Some schools have a built-in advantage when it comes to players, others have to work extremely hard just to get a recruit to visit. For the most part, Penn State has been in the former category - a big state school, fertile recruiting ground in Pennsylvania, a legendary head coach, unmatched tradition and, literally, generations of players committed to play for the Nittany Lions since birth.

Now, following the shocking allegations involving former assistant Jerry Sandusky and involvement (or lack thereof) of Penn State officials, all of the factors the school had going for it have been shown the door just as quickly as Joe Paterno was pushed out. One of the men at the center of the scandal, Mike McQueary, was the recruiting coordinator (he's on administrative leave) and it's very likely nobody from the current staff will be retained. The house is going to be cleaned but the only problem is the people still inside it are going to have to cobble together a class of 2012 first.

"Penn State's reputation, especially in the Northeast part of the country was second to none," CBS Sports analyst Rich Rodriguez said last week. "If there was a player in that quadrant in the country, they had a chance to get them. ... They'll take a little hit and they'll recover and still be the choice in the Northeast part of the country."

The current recruiting class for the school is led by Glen Ellyn (Ill.) defensive lineman Tommy Schutt and totals 15 players. There has only been one public decommitment since the scandal broke but keep in mind that it is very early and plenty of the players have barely had time to think about recruiting with teams in the middle of playoff runs. The commits that have made public comments all generally have said they're taking a 'wait and see" approach and that's pretty consistent with other places that have seen a cloud hover over the program.

But soon, there won't be a time to wait and players will have to see what Penn State is offering and what others are. Don't be surprised if most of the class takes at least one visit to another school and continues to open the phone lines up to other staffs. There will be recruits among the 15 in the current class and others out there that simply want to go to Penn State and will likely end up signing in February. For those that aren't fully committed to the university, those that wanted to play for Joe Paterno and the current staff or those that are simply uneasy with the whole situation, it's going to be extremely tough for them to fax their letter of intent to State College.

Some uncommitted players who had been considering the school have already dropped them from consideration and that is the area the staff will have the most difficult time with. Athlete Joel Caleb, defensive end Noah Spence and defensive tackle Jamil Pollard are among the prospects that have decided to drop the Nittany Lions down on their list or take them off all together.

Can Penn State rebuild their reputation and recruit as good, if not better, than they were before? It depends on who they hire as head coach. The school is not going to receive NCAA sanctions from all indications so there will be no bowl bans or scholarship reductions to speak about. The most difficult thing going forward is the current group of coaches going into the living rooms of recruits across the country and convincing them and their parents that things will be ok in State College and Penn State is still a great place to get an education and play football.

It will get easier as time goes on and especially once a new head coach and staff are hired but for right now, recruiting players to become a Nittany Lion is the hardest sell in college football. Penn State should be back, some day down the road. For now though, it's tough roads ahead and an even tougher task on the recruiting trail.
