Huskies add California defensive back

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Washington picked up a ... Washington. Orange (Calif.) defensive back Darien Washington committed to the Huskies according to reports Friday night, as they dipped into Southern California once again for another player.

"I verbally committed to Washington," Washington told Dawgman.com. "I called coach (Nick) Holt on Tuesday and then he gave me coach (Steve) Sarkisian's number and I called him and committed.

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Washington tore his labrum about a year ago and missed several games at the beginning of his junior year. He still managed to put up some good numbers last season, grabbing two interceptions and racking up 48 tackles.

"I played through it last year and just gutted it out," he said. "They held me out of the first few games because they wanted to make sure I could take the pain and that I wouldn't hurt it any further.

"Once I figured out I could make tackles and not feel it that bad, I just went out and played and I felt like I had a pretty good year considering that."

Washington lives up to the label defensive back. He played safety last season in high school but will come up to Seattle as a corner. Washington was the choice over such schools as Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado.

The addition of appropriately named Washington give Holt and Sarkisian three commitments for the class of 2012. The Seattle Times notes that he would be the fourth player in school history to have the last name of Washington. Considering it's a somewhat common name, one would think that's a low number. Either way, the Huskies will add another name to the list next year.
