National Signing Day Winners and Losers: Big Ten

Posted by Tom Fornelli

Breaking down who won and who lost in the Big Ten on National Signing Day

WINNER: The Recruiting Machine Known To Mankind As Urban Meyer

Scholarship limits, postseason bans, these things matter not to the one known as Urban Meyer. They will not keep him out of your high school classrooms where he's stealing your recruits. Since the day Meyer first set foot in Columbus as its new Caesar, high schoolers have flocked to the Buckeyes, previous commitments be damned. What was already a solid class was boosted on Wednesday by the addition of offensive lineman Kyle Dodson, who had previously committed to Wisconsin. Then there's the work Meyer did on the defensive line, closing on players like Noah Spence, Tommy Schutt, Se'von Pittman and Adolphus Washington, and it's no wonder this class is ranked third in the CBS Sports National Signing Day Top 25. Making matters even scarier for the rest of the Big Ten, Meyer's already locked up two top recruits in the 2013 class. The man -- machine? -- just cannot be stopped.

LOSER: The Bottom Of The Legends And Leaders

Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois and Indiana all managed to finish at the bottom of their respective divisions in 2011, and nothing in their 2012 recruiting classes makes you think any of the four will be climbing the standings anytime soon. Particularly when you compare their classes to the teams above them. Only two 4-star recruits signed with any of them, and both of those players are on their way to Northwestern: defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo and defensive tackle Greg Kuhar.

WINNER: Fans Of The Old Big Ten

Remember the long, long ago of the late 20th and early 21st centuries when the Big Ten was dominated by Ohio State and Michigan? Yes, well, it appears those days may be upon us again. While we already went over Ohio State's impressive haul, the work put in at Michigan by Brady Hoke and his staff shouldn't be ignored. The Wolverines put together the fourth ranked class in the CBS Sports National Signing Day Top 25 thanks to signings like offensive lineman Kyle Kalis and defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins. Brady Hoke put a lot of emphasis on the offensive line and the defense in this class, and it could go a long way to ensuring that "Ohio" and "That School Up North" play twice a season for the next few years. For more on Michigan's 2012 class, you can watch Brady Hoke talk about his newest players here.

LOSER: Wisconsin

This isn't a knock on Wisconsin's class, though it is the smallest of any class in the Big Ten with only 12 commits. No, it's more a representation of the fact that Ohio State and Michigan seem to be back on their way to national prominence. The Badgers enjoyed the last few years and the struggles of the Wolverines and Buckeyes, taking advantage of their problems with two straight conference titles and Rose Bowl trips. This isn't to say that the Badgers won't win the Big Ten again anytime soon, but it just got a lot harder to do so.

WINNER: Penn State

You're not used to seeing the term "winner" in relation to Penn State's football program lately, are you? Well, when you consider all that has gone on in Happy Valley over the last six months, combined with the fact the team's new head coach is still busy trying to win a Super Bowl, you have to be impressed with what the Nittany Lions did on Wednesday. No, the 19 players that committed to Penn State won't blow you away as a whole, but it's a class that will ensure there's still talent at Penn State as the program tries to transition to a new era of Nittany Lions football.

LOSER: The Lack Of Attention Paid To Purdue's Class

You're probably confused right now, and I apologize for that. What I'm trying to say here is that while you weren't paying any attention, Purdue and Danny Hope went out and put together a pretty nice class in West Lafayette. Athlete Carlos Carvajal -- all 6 feet and 7 inches of him -- and defensive end Ryan Watson are probably the most intriguing prospects, but from top to bottom, this whole class is pretty solid. Especially considering Purdue's recent troubles on the gridiron. What's more surprising is how this class is spread across the country. While 4 of the 25 signees are from Indiana, the rest come from all four corners of the country, including New York, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Ohio and California. Depending on how quickly these players can contribute, the Boilermakers may catch some people by surprise in the next couple of years.

8/9 Recruiting Roundup

Posted by Bryan Fischer

- The CEO of Cincinnati Bell has become a mentor for defensive end Adolphus Washington.

- The always interesting Athlon Consensus 100 is out, bringing together all of the online ranking services.
- Tight end Kent Taylor is narrowing down his list on Wednesday.

Georgia commit Derrick Henry and fellow running back Kelvin Taylor are both special players.

Michigan's 2012 class is almost complete with Ondre Pipkins' commitment.

Could Florida be in-line for more five-stars?

Commitments:

Michigan State added offensive tackle Kodi Kieler as commitment 14 for this class.

Running back Mike Hilton committed to Ole Miss over Mississippi State and Kentucky. Running back I'Tavius Mathers has also committed to the Rebels.

Very nice pick up for BYU as defensive end Troy Hinds committed to the school.

Athlete Taylor Barton will leave Florida for college after committing to Illinois.

Ondre Pipkins becomes the latest 'Michigan Man'

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Michigan's roll on the recruiting trail continued Monday as the number one-ranked recruiting class added big Kansas City (Mo.) defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins to what is surely a cornerstone class for Brady Hoke.

"It's going to be great to be able to come back home where I belong and to be part of the legacy all the greats left," Pipkins told 247Sports.com.

The 6-foot-3, 320-pounder recently visited Michigan unofficially for the school's BBQ at the Big House and came away impressed enough to make a commitmentment shortly thereafter. Pipkins is originally from the state of Michigan, Saginaw to be precise, and held offers from Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Ohio State and others.

Pipkins gives the Wolverines their 23rd commitment for the class of 2012. He racked up 50 tackles and four sacks, to go along with eight forced fumbles, last season as a junior.

6/20 Recruiting Roundup

Full recaps of the Washington Nike Camp and Heath Evans 7-on-7 are coming later today so keep checking the Eye on Recruiting for tons of great stuff.

Here's a Michigan recruiting update with information on Trey Keenan, Ondre Pipkins and more. Also, here's some reaction from Top 100 offensive tackle Andrus Peat on his visit to Ann Arbor this weekend.

One of the top 2013 cornerbacks, Sojourn Shelton, went to Florida State's summer camp on Sunday.

- Running back Fabian Moreau won position group MVP at the NUC Southeast Region combine in Atlanta.

Here's a look back at Florida's recruiting class of 2008.

Oregon offensive lineman Nick Cody (who's a journalism major by the way) helped put together this video about recruiting services to examine if high school players gain exposure from them or are being exposed:

Ohio State Nike Camp Top Performers: Defense

Posted by Bryan Fischer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Some of the best from all over the Midwest and East Coast came to play on the campus of Ohio State for this past Saturday's Nike Camp. Here's a few of the top performers on the defensive side of the ball from the camp:

Defensive line:

Adolphus Washington

One of the highest regarded players at the camp, Washington mostly lived up to the hype. He's a bit smaller than listed but is compact and shows great explosiveness. His feet were very good for the most part and he does a good job of staying low and getting underneath offensive linemen. Washington's rip move is very nice and he knows what moves he's going to do before the snap and executes them just about every time on his way to the quarterback.

Ondre Pipkins

Pipkins' performance was one of the surprises of the camp and showed off a powerful ability to penetrate and rush the passer during his one-on-ones. He's very strong and already a two gap player inside at defensive tackle. He's about the right size for the next level entering his senior year but needs to make sure he doesn't add any more weight. He gets off the line well and didn't lose a rep on his way to position group MVP.

David Perkins

Perkins was a defensive end at the event but it's clear from just looking at him that he's an outside linebacker. He showed off his athleticism by blowing past offensive linemen and probably was the fastest of the group coming off the edge. He's got some moves but you really couldn't tell how well he moves in space if he were a linebacker. Both him and Pipkins were aggressive in getting reps and winning them which is something coaches will like about them too.

Linebackers:

James Ross

Ross was one of the headliners and the Michigan commitment did not disappoint at all. Physically, he looks ready for the next level and while he's only 6-foot-1, looks much bigger once he eventually puts on the pads. His feet were constantly moving and he changed directions quickly and smoothly. He was one of, if not the, best players in pass rush drills and a stand out during 7-on-7 as well.

Jaylon Smith

Smith must have felt comfortable roaming around the Ohio State practice fields since his brother does it on a daily basis as a Buckeye running back. Just a sophomore, he looks very good in coverage and really can turn his hips to run with the receiver. He nabbed the MVP award over others like Ross and is very much a complete player. There's still a few things he needs learn but overall he was one of the best players on defense at the camp.

Darrien Howard

Howard stood out as one of the biggest players at the linebacker position - he almost could have swapped places with Perkins and played on the defensive line. Also an underclassman, he was able to dominate any of the smaller running backs in the pass rush drills but could also cover tight ends and others during pass rush drills. He's got middle linebacker written all over him and will probably will have plenty of offers from teams running a Tampa-2 system that requires him to drop to the middle of the field.

Defensive backs:

Sebastian Smith

The position group MVP, Smith was one of the taller defensive backs to come to a Nike Camp. He's a tad taller than 6-foot-2 but is athletic and moves like a safety who is much smaller. Strong and fluid, he had a nice backpedal and could turn his hips quickly. Expect Smith's stock to take off once schools take another look at him.

De'van Bogard

Another highly regarded prospect who was in attendance, Bogard has good size for a safety and probably could play a little nickel corner with some coaching. He's still a bit raw but reacts well to the receiver and the ball when it's in the air. Bogard roamed the secondary effectively and should continue to grow at the position.

Marcus Foster

One thing you notice about Foster was how quickly he could turn and change directions. He's another big body roaming the secondary and you could see him continuing to grow and eventually end up as an outside linebacker. The Cincinnati commit really would go after the ball when it was in the air and seemed to snatch it out of the air when he got his hands on it.
