Top recruits in action this weekend

Posted by Bryan Fischer

There are a ton of great high school football games this weekend and the biggest reason they are, well, big games are the recruits leading their teams into action. MaxPreps took a look at the top 10 games on Friday and Saturday and here's a list of the recruits to watch in five of the games.

St. Thomas Aquinas vs. Prattville

Keep an eye on: Florida State commit and defensive tackle Justin Shanks, Alabama-bound athlete Justin Thomas and defensive end Caleb Gulledge and corner/Wake Forest verbal LaRonji Vason for Prattville. St. Thomas Aquinas is powered by defensive end/Miami commit Jelani Hamilton, uncommitted running back Dami Ayoola and defensive end Bryan Cox Jr.
Armwood vs. Bishop Gorman

Keep an eye on: Armwood is loaded with talent, including offensive lineman Cody Waldrop (going to South Carolina), linebacker Eric Striker (Oklahoma), defensive tackle Sheldon Lewison (Wake Forest) and uncommitted defensive back Jarvis McCall. The team will be without Florida-bound running back Matt Jones due to an injury. Gorman has several uncommitted recruits leading the charge, including offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley and Ron Scoggins and running back Shaq Powell.

South Panola vs. Hoover

Keep an eye on: Panola is powered by Ole Miss commits Issac Gross and Temario Strong on the defensive line.

Cedar Hill vs. Allen

Keep an eye on: For Cedar Hill, offensive lineman Aderius Epps is headed to Kansas State next year and defensive end David Harris is drawing some interest. Allen has a trio of commits leading the top five team with quarterback Alec Morris (Alabama), running back Jonathan Williams (Missouri) and linebacker Thaddeus LaGrone (Baylor).

Harrison vs. Cass Tech

Keep an eye on: Cass Tech is loaded once again with Michigan-bound cornerback Terry Richardson and linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone, along with linebacker Laron Taylor (committed to Iowa). There's two future Wolverines on Harrison as well in tight end Devin Funchess and defensive end Mario Ojemudia. Wide receiver Aaron Burbridge is headed to Michigan State.

Ranking the Big 12 Recruiting Classes

Posted by Bryan Fischer
1. Texas (Ranked #2 overall by MaxPreps)

It's no surprise to see the Longhorns occupy the top spot in the conference recruiting rankings and this year they have a particularly strong class. Mack Brown has collected five top 100 recruits, including the top running back and a wide receiver who happens to be the number three overall prospect.

2. Texas A&M (#6)

The Aggies have taken advantage of the turn around in College Station on the field with success on the recruiting trail. Quarterback Matt Davis and running back Trey Williams impressed over the summer and there are several explosive players on defense headed to Aggieland.

3. Oklahoma (#15)

A smaller class than normal when all is said and done, Bob Stoops has searched far and wide for some great talent. They managed to grab two top 100 players and several others who certainly could be in the final rankings.

4. Missouri (#16)

This class is a little under the radar with the top-heavy Big 12 rankings but it's a very solid class with some good players to build around. Running back Jonathan Williams is ranked in the top 100 and quarterback Maty Mauk is one of the most prolific high school passers in the country.

5. Texas Tech

Pretty impressive haul for Tommy Tuberville and company. Stealing offensive lineman Michael Starts out of Waco from several other teams was a coup and both lines will be restocked with this group.

6. Baylor

The Bears have a surprisingly big class at this point in the year with 18 commitments. Kiante Griffin is a terrific athlete who can play either wide receiver or defensive back and Thaddeus LaGrone is an athletic and rangy linebacker.

7. Oklahoma State

This class has seen some defections and Mike Gundy has finished bridesmaid to several prospects but this is still a solid, if small, group. There's plenty of time for this class to move up, especially if they can land legacy running back Barry Sanders Jr.

8. Iowa State

It's surprising to see such a diverse group headed to Ames with players from Florida to California to Texas. Grant Rohach could compete for the starting quarterback job early.

9. Kansas State

As one would expect, this class will eventually be made up of several junior college transfers so it's hard to figure out just how well the Wildcats are doing on the recruiting trail. Linebacker Will Davis is a good pick up though.

10. Kansas

One of the smallest classes in the country, the Jayhawks have work left to do. There's two quarterbacks so it looks like that need is filled and it's time to move on to others.

TCU NIke Camp Top Performers

Posted by Bryan Fischer

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU Nike Camp was loaded with talent from all over Texas and the Southwest Sunday afternoon. While players went through position drills and one-on-one match ups, here are a few names from each position group that caught our eye.

Defensive line

Torshiro Davis, 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Shreveport, La. Committed to LSU.

Breakdown: Davis was lightning quick off the ball and got to the quarterback quicker than anyone else at the camp. He tended to take a good line when speed rushing and did a good job of staying low after firing off. He will probably need to add a few pounds in order to play against better competition but he certainly has the frame to do it. Davis looks like he will fit in well as a pass rushing outside linebacker.

Others of note: Mansfield (Texas) defensive end and Texas commit Hassan Ridgeway certainly looked the part of a top flight defensive end at 6-foot-3, 240. Texas A&M commit Michael Richardson was a bit thin but has a good 6-foot-2 frame and was very explosive. He also took a rep or two at defensive tackle during one-on-ones though he was obviously too small to play that in college, he did show good hand placement. 2013 tackle A'Shawn Robinson out of Arlington (Texas) is someone to keep an eye on.

Linebackers

Peter Jinkens, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Dallas, Texas. Committed to Texas.

Breakdown: With several smaller running backs in attendance, Jinkens was able to show off his athleticism and impressed just about everybody at the camp. He has excellent speed and was easily the quickest linebacker in the group, reading and reacting to everything. He broke down well in the tackling drill and was one of the best in pass coverage by getting a quick drop and sticking to receivers.

Others of note: Nebraska commit and Rockhurst (Mo.) linebacker Michael Rose was short and compact but he proved he could play at the event. He performed well for a middle linebacker and moved well, turning his hips better than players weighing 30 pounds less. Allen (Texas) linebacker Thaddeus LaGrone was a bit thin but had really long arms and turned his hips well. He could be an outside linebacker that also rushes the passer at times.

Secondary

Kenny Iloka, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Sugar Land, Texas.

Breakdown: There were plenty of cornerback prospects at the camp but Iloka really stood out among the safety group. He has great size and played the center field role of a safety very well in 7-on-7. He stays on his toes and turns his hips to run to the ball in addition to a very nice, smooth backpedal. He is the brother of Boise State safety George Iloka but doesn't hold any offers.

Others of note: Texas commit Bryson Echols didn't seem like much on first glance but once he started going through drills it was clear as to why the Longhorn coaches liked him. Echols has super quick feet and can really close the gap between him and a receiver. He also is very competitive. TCU commit Daje Johnson took home position MVP and was a tough matchup for receivers all day, grabbing at least one interception. Mesquite (Texas) cornerback DeVante Harris also looked smooth and played receivers well.

Offensive line

Michael Starts, 6-foot-4, 280 pounds, Waco, Texas.

Breakdown: Starts was easily the best lineman at the event and was one of the few who held multiple offers among the offensive lineman group. He played both sides of the ball but it was clear from watching him that he is an offensive tackle based on the way he moves his feet and uses his leverage to his advantage.

Others of note: Duncanville (Texas) offensive tackle Adam Butler took home position MVP awards and looked really impressive. He has really long arms, good size and did well in pass blocking drills. Underclassman Jake Raulerson of Celina (Texas) also has a bright future ahead of him but needs to keep adding weight to an otherwise very good 6-foot-5 frame.

Wide receiver

Thomas Johnson, 6-foot, 185 pounds, Dallas, Texas. Committed to Texas.

Breakdown: Johnson was impressive all day long and could get to top gear quicker than just about every other wide receiver or defensive back. He has a soft set of hands and is very polished for someone his age. Johnson might not be very tall but he was a very good looking player against several good defensive backs and generally had his way.

Others of note: Baylor commit Kiante Griffin wasn't polished but he found a way to get open and catch the ball. He's another slot receiver type who could develop into a steal for the Bears. 2013 receiver Ellis Jefferson is a big player who could still fill out his frame but nevertheless was able to catch the ball and move well.

Running back

Bryan Driskell, 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, McKinney, Texas.

Breakdown: One of the smaller backs in the group, Driskell was also the quickest. He could catch the ball and had such a low center of gravity that he able to cut away from the defender like a mini-Barry Sanders. He has a nice burst out of his cut too and the speed to turn the corner and out run everyone.

Others of note: Allen (Texas) back Jonathan Williams was impressive to no one's surprise. Tavarreon Dickerson won position MVP and was another good scat-back. Lawton (Okla.) sophomore Darius Graham also looked impressive but was a little unsure of himself at times.
