Harrell heads to Notre Dame

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Notre Dame continues to build their next recruiting class, adding to the 2012 edition Thursday night in Charlotte (N.C.) offensive tackle Mark Harrell.

“I know it’s the right one for me and I’m not going back on it,” Harrell told The South Bend Tribune.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Harrell is a big tight end in high school but will shift to tackle once he arrives in South Bend, similar to Irish 2011 signee Troy Niklas.

“A good, solid, down-the-line guy,” MaxPreps analyst Tom Lemming said of Harrell. “A solid prospect. Definitely a Notre Dame type of kid.”

Harrell unofficially visited the school twice before committing. He held offers from Michigan, Tennessee, Stanford, Clemson and North Carolina among others. He is the second offensive lineman for the Irish's class of 2012 and seventh commitment overall.

“I decided to pull the trigger,” he said. “I couldn’t wait any more.”

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has made recruiting offensive and defensive linemen a priority since taking over the reigns of the team. Harrell is the eighth line commitment in the past two classes on the offensive side.

1/28 Recruiting Roundup

Posted by Byran Fischer

The Friday before Signing Day is one of the busiest of the recruiting season as coaches make last minute pushes and recruits head out on final visits. Some links to catch you up on the action.

- Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel has a great look at how kickers, sometimes the key to games in college, get a little short-changed when it comes to recruiting.

- The battle for Southern California offensive lineman Troy Niklas is down to Notre Dame and USC. Niklas had considered Stanford but was not admitted and had cooled towards the Cardinal with the coaching change.

- Great look at so-called ‘Package deals’ involving recruits by Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. One of the reasons the story is poignant is that highly-regarded running back Isaiah Crowell’s best friend is committed to Georgia and the Bulldogs are heavily recruiting Crowell to join him in Athens.

- A few people tried to connect the dots when Stanford commit Amir Carlisle switched to USC after his dad was let go from his position at the San Francisco 49ers following the arrival of Jim Harbaugh. Not so, Duane Carlisle says, his son had other factors that influenced his decision.

- Defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan has decommitted from Clemson and is now lists Georgia as his favorite.

- Washington has picked up, thanks to a tip from Steve Sarkisian’s twitter, a new commitment from safety Travis Freeney. He had been committed to Arizona.
