Vadal Alexander commits to LSU

MaxPreps staff report

Vadal Alexander, the nation's No. 54 recruit and No. 8 offensive lineman, has committed to LSU.
"I had taken my official visits to Alabama and Auburn, and going into this past weekend's trip to LSU, Auburn was leading," Alexander told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"But I went to LSU and it just clicked for me. It was one of those things that I just knew when I left from Louisiana on Sunday evening. It was the atmosphere, the coaches, and everything. There was nothing negative about LSU, It was all positive."

Alexander is one of several top recruits for Class AA powerhouse Buford (Ga.), which is ranked No. 13 in this week's Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. Teammate Reid Ferguson, also an offensive lineman, committed to LSU in July while linebacker Dillon Lee has been committed to Alabama since May.

LSU's recruiting class was previously ranked No. 12 in the team recruiting rankings. Alexander joins a group that features Trey GranierAvery Johnson and Patrick Miller.

Miles to the NFL? LSU's recruits will hear it

Posted by Bryan Fischer

"Any little edge."

That's what one assistant once told me about recruiting. Their staff, another staff, everybody's staff. It's how the game is played nowadays.

That's why news that NFL teams might pursue LSU head coach Les Miles after this season will - in some form or fashion - affect the Tigers' recruiting. LSU currently has 19 players committed for the class of 2012, most of whom are solid and will end up putting on the purple and gold. But for some, like wide four-star Pompano Beach (Fla.) receiver Avery Johnson - younger brother of former Baton Rouge star Patrick Peterson - the article about Miles will likely be printed out or emailed to him by the end of the day by other SEC programs.

Any little edge. Create some doubt about the head coach being there to coach a recruit all three or four years he's at a school is one of the most common tactics other coaches use to negative recruit. It was used against Pete Carroll and Kirk Ferentz for years and the same was said of Nick Saban during his time at LSU before he ultimately left for the NFL. Coaches hate it and will do as much as they can to dispel it but still, this type of negative recruiting goes on all the time.

On the NFL side, it's easy to see why Miles fits the mold of a college coach who could make a successful jump up. According to CBSSports' Michael Freeman:

League executives also seem to be impressed with Miles' ability to build and maintain a top-level program. While the challenges and differences between professional and college are obvious -- the salary cap being the biggest -- Miles has made LSU into a staying power in the toughest conference in the country.

The Hat on the NFL sidelines? For LSU and college football fans, we hope not. But either way, it will probably come up to a few players in the Tigers' 11th-ranked recruiting class.

Top 25 recruiting classes & the recruiting title

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Senior Writer Dennis Dodd tackled the difficult task of putting together the CBSSports.com preseason top 25. One of the common themes is that the national champ usually has to come from behind in the polls. Taking a look at the recruiting rankings, it's usually the opposite. Sure there are the Signing Day closers, such at USC or Florida, but the Alabama's, Texas' and Florida State's of the world put together a good class early and head to February with a good idea of who they're signing while holding out hope a top guy will put on their hat late in the process.

Here's a breakdown of the current MaxPreps Top 25 recruiting rankings and a little bit of insight as to who will eventually be declared recruiting national champion.

The favorites

1. Michigan (top recruit: #33 Terry Richardson)

2. Texas (#3 Cayleb Jones)

3. Florida (#12 D.J. Humphries)

4. Florida State (#5 Mario Edwards)

6. Alabama (#19 Geno Smith)

One Big Ten team, one Big 12 team, two SEC teams and the ACC banner-carrier are the favorites to take home the mythical February title. It's no surprise to see some of the names on this list but newcomer Michigan is one considering Brady Hoke has yet to coach a game. It's not a deep year for Midwest talent but the Wolverines have certainly grabbed the creme of the crop and as a result sit in the pole position past the halfway point.

The contenders

5. Miami (#77 Jelani Hamilton)

7. Texas A&M (#51 Trey Williams)

9. Auburn (#30 Zeke Pike)

10. LSU (#58 Avery Johnson)

11. Virginia Tech (Donaldven Manning)

15. Clemson (#16 Travis Blanks)

18. Notre Dame (#13 Jarron Jones)

The next group of teams has an outside shot of moving up into the top five and challenging for the title with a strong close. Miami is in a difficult position in that they have a strong class filled with local talent but given the NCAA investigation swirling around the program, no one knows how long Al Golden can keep things up. With recent news that the Aggies would be moving to the SEC, one figures they could see a bounce and grab one or two top prospects by selling playing time in the nation's best football conference. Auburn has done well again this year and is seeing a championship bounce with their current group and could see other prospects come around to playing on the Plains. LSU and Virginia Tech have put together under the radar classes but they're both strong enough to put them in position to move up with a top 100 recruit committing. Clemson and Notre Dame both have small classes but have shown they can get things done between now and players putting pen to paper.

The pretenders

8. Virginia (#50 Michael Moore)

12. Penn State (#36 J.J. Denman)

13. South Carolina (#20 Shaq Roland)

14. Arizona State (#45 Evan Goodman)

16. Oklahoma (#47 Durron Neal)

This group of teams look like they can make a strong push to finish in the top five but it will be a steep up hill battle. Virginia is ranked highly due to the numbers they have and when others catch up in that department, they'll slide back down to the middle of the pack. Penn State has been solid but not spectacular in a good year for Pennsylvania talent. South Carolina is comfortable with their class but likely won't grab a top 10 player to push them up and Arizona State will likely not finish as the top Pac-12 class at the end of the day. Oklahoma is limited in terms of numbers this year and while they might sneak in the top group, it will be hard to go much further.

No chance

17. Cincinnati (#72 Bennie Coney)

19. Missouri (#91 Jonathan Williams)

20. Michigan State (#63 Sevon Pittman)

21. Wisconsin (#67 Dan Voltz)

22. Indiana (#2 Gunner Kiel)

23. Rutgers (#71 Leonte Caroo)

24. Washington (#70 Cyler Miles)

25. West Virginia (Brandon Napoleon)

It's a nice year for this group of team but it will be tough for any of these schools to move above 15 in the rankings. Likewise, it might be tough for Indiana, Rutgers, Wisconsin and Michigan State to stay in the top 25 as other schools start filling out their class with 20 or more recruits.

Ranking the SEC recruiting classes

Posted by Bryan Fischer

1. Florida (#3 overall according to MaxPreps)

Three top 100 players and a solid foundation on the offensive line give Florida the top spot at the moment in the SEC. Plenty can change but this class brings a mix of players who fit Will Muschamp and Charlie Weis' style and who are terrific athletes.

2. Alabama (#7)

This class also has three top 100 players and it would be no surprise to see the Crimson Tide end up in the top spot come Signing Day. They lost out on in-state quarterback Jameis Winston but picked up a good replacement signal-caller in Alec Morris and this class features a lot of really good athletes who could play multiple positions.

3. LSU (#9)

The Tigers have two top 100 commits but one of them, Avery Johnson, is on shaky ground and is still pretty open with his recruitment. That said, this class is full of talented athletes that can play on either side of the ball and, though it might take a year or two in the program, could have some impact defensive players.

4. Auburn (#10)

Auburn has certainly seen a championship bounce in their recruiting, grabbing three top 100 recruits for 2012. Tight end Darrion Hutcherson can come in and play right away, as can several others out of this group.

5. South Carolina (#12)

The Old Ball Coach Steve Spurrier has mopped up in-state talent as of late and is doing so again with this class. Shaq Roland is the lone top 100 recruit but this class fills needs and brings in several talented skill position players.

6. Georgia (#20)

Despite Mark Richt being on the hot seat, he certainly can recruit. They have two top 100 players on either side of the line in Jonathan Taylor and John Theus and they've added several other quality players on defense so far.

7. Vanderbilt (#23)

This class is headlined by top 100 recruit Brian Kimbrow but there's also a lot of other talented recruits that Commodores fans have been unaccustomed to landing. James Franklin and company have particularly gone after the defensive line and have hit Georgia and Tennessee hard for recruits.

8. Arkansas

There's no big name for the Razorbacks in this class but it's a solid group of athletes with a lot of potential. The wide receivers in particular could take some time to develop but have the physical tools to be very good in Bobby Petrino's system.

9. Kentucky

Loaded with Blaylocks (three players with the last name) and linemen, this class has done a good job honing in on a few diamonds in the rough. Quarterback Patrick Towles is an Elite 11-level quarterback and could play early in his career.

10. Tennessee

This class has some momentum after being one of the smaller classes at the beginning of July. At the linebacker position in particular they've done a great job of landing talented recruits but have to address other areas to rise up this list.

11. Ole Miss

It's a solid but not spectacular effort so far for Houston Nutt. They are bringing in several good running backs but need to continue their course if they want to move up the pecking order.

12. Mississippi State

The Bulldogs have mined the in-state talent and gotten several above average athletes but there is no big name you would expect after having a big season.

5/13 Recruiting Roundup

Posted by Bryan Fischer

A happy (?) Friday the 13th. Have another Elite 11 competition today, this one should draw a ton of great quarterbacks from all over the West to the Cal campus. Look for a recap on the blog late tonight.

- Arkansas is going after a few junior college transfers and they're looking for some experienced players.

- As one would expect, Texas is recruiting well in the Lone Star State.

- Michigan State has been sending out a few more offers to out of state recruits.

- LSU commit Avery Johnson has an offer from South Carolina and is still considering the school.
