Florida adds another on the defensive line

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Florida defensive line coach Dan Quinn also doubles as the Gators' defensive coordinator and he's quickly leaving his mark on the class of 2012, picking a third defensive lineman commit in Tyrone (Ga.) tackle Quinteze Williams.

"We just liked it,” Ellis Williams, Quinteze’s father, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We feel like the atmosphere there is right for him. We liked the schemes and feel like the staff down there is just unmatched."

The 6-foot-4, 300 pound Williams plays on both lines in high school but will be coached by Quinn in college. He plans on graduating in December and enrolling early at Florida.

Holding offers from Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, USF, Tennessee and Vanderbilt, Williams selected Florida after the school relentlessly recruited him much better than even the in-state programs.

“Georgia Tech, they offered, but it was just an offer, you know?,” Mr. Williams told the paper. “They never really showed a lot of interest beyond that. Georgia approached us early on but they wanted him as an offensive lineman. They recently came forth with an offer as a defensive lineman, a couple of weeks ago. But they didn’t really show a lot of interest either and we were already leaning another way at that point.

“At the end of the day, you like who likes you.”

Williams is the eighth commitment for the Gators' class of 2012 and joins Stone Mountain (Ga.) tackle JaFar Mann and Venice (Fla.) tackle Dante Phillips as incoming defensive lineman.

Florida adds big defensive tackle Jafar Mann

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Florida head coach Will Muschamp picked up a bit of momentum on the recruiting trail heading into the weekend. Stephenson (Ga.) defensive tackle Jafar Mann became the seventh commitment for the Gators Friday afternoon, verbally committing on his father's birthday.

“He was really happy about that,” Mann told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about honoring his father.

The 6-foot-3, 270 pound defensive tackle joins running back and high school teammate Mike Davis as a Gator commitment. Muschamp is also pursuing Stephenson defensive end Jarontay Jones and linebacker Raphael Kirby so Mann might not be the last from his school to verbally commit to Florida.

“I’d say it’s a strong possibility,” Mann said of the group playing together in college.

The timing of the announcement came as a big of a surprise to some that follow recruiting but for Mann, Florida was a program that was out front for sometime.

“It feels really nice,” he told the paper. “I think I had my mind made up for a while. I just needed to sit back a while and think about it and make sure it was the right decision. I definitely think it’s the best place for me.”

Mann is on the MaxPreps Top 100 for 2012 Watch List and held almost 20 scholarship offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Miami and Tennessee. He is the second defensive line commitment for Florida, joining tackle Dante Phillips.
