Shutdown CB Geno Smith commits to Alabama

By MaxPreps' Stephen Spiewak

St. Pius X Catholic (Atlanta, Ga.) cornerback Geno Smith committed to Alabama today in an announcement held at his school.

Smith, the nation's No. 18 recruit and No. 2 defensive back chose the Crimson Tide over fellow finalist and rival Auburn, from a pool of dozens of offers.

With the addition of Smith, Alabama jumps to No. 5 in the team recruiting rankings, giving it the second-strongest class in the SEC behind only Florida.

Michigan, with five Top 100 recruits, retains its hold on the No. 1 spot in the rankings.

Smith joins an already-impressive recruiting class that features standout defenders Eddie Williams, Dillon Lee and Reggie Ragland.

Earlier today, Smith was named a 2011 Preseason All-American, joining Ragland as the only Alabama commits to receive such honors.

2012 Linebackers to Watch

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Oxford (Ala.) star Kwon Alexander is the top linebacker in the nation according to CBS Sports/MaxPreps Recruiting Analyst Tom Lemming but there's a lot of football to be played between now and Signing Day. Here's five other linebackers - in no particular order - who you need to keep an eye out for this year. Each of them has a chance to move Alexander off the top spot and become the top linebacker for the class of 2012.

Deaysean Rippy (Sto-Rox High, McKees Rocks, Pa.)
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 210 pounds
Offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Colorado, UConn, Florida, Florida State, Iowa, LSU, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, South Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, Wisconsin

What's to like: It's no surprise to see Rippy become one of the most recruited athletes in the country after watching his film. He has been on the radar since his sophomore year and is a really versatile player as an outside linebacker. His pass rush skills are exceptional and he is fast enough to even be a safety at the next level. Rippy is one of the best players in coverage among this group of linebackers.

Needs to work on: Rippy is still a bit undersized if he wants to play outside linebacker in a 4-3 and could add a bit of weight.

Noor Davis (The Villages High, The Villages, Fla.)
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 225 pounds
Offers from: Alabama, Boston College, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, Miami, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Pitt, Purdue, USF, Stanford, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCF, UCLA, USC, Virginia

What's to like: Davis is an exceptional prospect at the outside linebacker position and it's hard not to like what you see when you see him in person or on film. He is a smart player on the field who reads the play quickly and almost always takes a good angle to make the tackle. It's almost funny to see him standout on the field due to his size and the way he hits.

Needs to work on: Davis needs to learn some of the nuances of playing outside linebacker and move beyond a pass rusher from the outside.

Jabari Ruffin (Downey High, Downey, Calif.)
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 245 pounds
Committed to USC

What's to like: Ruffin certainly looks the part and is probably the best linebacker west of the Mississippi. He looked sharp at the recent LA Nike Camp and his athleticism jumps out at you when you realize he played offense last season. Not only does he have speed to burn but his explosiveness is really apparent when you see him get ready to deliver a big hit.

Needs to work on: There's not a whole lot more that Ruffin needs to do to be successful but he should benefit from playing only linebacker in college. Becoming a read and react player instead of relying mostly on his athleticism to make plays is the next step for him to become a great player.

Reggie Ragland (Bob Jones High, Madison, Ala.)
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 235 pounds
Committed to Alabama

What's to like: Ragland's size and speed make him a very, very good prospect manning the middle linebacker position. He's instinctive and when he reads his keys is one of the best in the country. He fills gaps very well and usually ends up blowing people up rather than just tackling them. He also does a good job of engaging a defender and then getting said defender out of his way.

Needs to work on: Ragland is a bit of a lose cannon at times and sometimes tries to do too much. He'll need to improve his coverage skills as well, especially if he's to be a middle backer in a Cover-2 scheme that requires him to run down the field.

Cassanova McKinzy (Woodlawn High, Birmingham, Ala.)
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 230 pounds
Committed to Auburn

What's to like: McKinzy's name first of all. Beyond that though, there's plenty of things that Auburn coaches saw in McKinzy, including great size and speed at outside linebacker. He's very athletic and could play running back at the next level if he wanted to. McKinzy wraps up very well when tackling and is very instinctive.

Needs to work on: McKinzy may have all the measurables but he is still a bit raw at linebacker. He'll need to refine his coverage skills and improve his ability to read and react.

Alabama out in front for top 2013 recruit

By MaxPreps' Stephen Spiewak

Alabama, fresh off a stellar 2011 recruiting class that closed with Cyrus Kouandjio, is already making big strides with the class of 2012, gaining verbal pledges from eight recruits, including Eddie Williams, Kenyan Drake, and Reggie Ragland.

However, the Crimson Tide is also out in the lead for one of the country's top recruits for the class of 2013: Troup (LaGrange, Ga.) linebacker Reuben Foster.

Foster, who is 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, has tremendous size to go along with excellent instinct for such a young linebacker. He recently visited Alabama, where he got to spend time with current players and chat with head coach Nick Saban. He came away extremely impressed.

"They treat me like I'm part of the family already," Foster wrote in a text.

Asked if Alabama was his early leader, he replied, "Oh ya."

Foster also hopes to visit a geographically diverse group of schools that includes South Carolina, Texas and Oregon.

ZACH BANNER HAS OPTIONS

Zach Banner, one of the nation's top offensive linemen in the class of 2012, has plenty of options to weigh in the recruiting process. The 6-9, 310-pounder has received offers from across the country.

According to Lakes (Lakewood, Wash.) head coach Dave Miller, Banner has been recruited heavily by many Pac-10 programs, but he also has an interest in several schools far from home, including Ohio State and Michigan.

The Wolverines in particular seem to have piqued Banner's interest.

"Michigan is back in with Hoke, going back to the big road graders," Miller said. "Getting the offer from Michigan last week was really exciting for Zach."

Miller said that pedigree for producing top tackles could be an important factor in Banner's decision.

JAMIL POLLARD'S FIRST OFFER IS A BIG ONE

Florida has done well recruiting in New Jersey recently, landing the likes of Justin Trattou, Will Hill, and Josh Evans. The Gators are hoping to continue that trend by landing West Deptford (Westville, N.J.) two-way lineman Jamil Pollard.

Last week, Florida became the first program to offer the 6-5, 270-pounder, according to West Deptford head coach Clyde Folsom.

Pollard is thought to be a Rutgers lean, but the Scarlet Knights have yet to offer. By offering first, Florida has left an impression on one of the Garden State's best underclassmen.

COACHES ARE LINING UP FOR DORIAL GREEN-BECKHAM

Arguably the nation's top junior, Dorial Green-Beckham continues to be inundated with interest from colleges.

The verbal offers — from nearly every school in the country — had already poured in. Recently, Hillcrest was inundated with college coaches who are attempting to land the 6-6, talent-laden receiver.

According to Tracy Beckham, nearly a dozen head coaches visited the school in January before National Signing Day, from Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino to former Notre Dame head coach and current Florida assistant Charlie Weis.

With the sad news of Green-Beckham's younger brother Darnell being diagnosed with Leukemia, Green-Beckham may be more likely to play his college ball close to home, as the two share a close relationship.

DAVID PERKINS VISITS NOTRE DAME FOR JUNIOR DAY

David Perkins, a standout athlete at Washington (South Bend, Ind.), visited Notre Dame for Junior Day over the weekend.

The Fighting Irish have yet to offer Perkins, who claims offers from Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Louisville and several MAC schools.

Perkins transferred to Washington after originally beginning his high school career in Michigan. He finished his junior season with 63 tackles and 13 sacks.

BOSCO QUARTET FAR FROM MAKING DECISIONS

Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) boasts four juniors who will be highly sought-after in the next recruiting cycle: defensive end Darius Hamilton, wide receiver Leonte Carroo, and defensive backs Elijah Shumate and Yuri Wright.

The four played an instrumental role in Don Bosco Prep's 12-0 season last year, and figure to be key players for the Ironmen in 2011. All four have heard from numerous colleges and have yet to narrow down their list of schools.

Hamilton is the son of former New York Giants defensive tackle Keith Hamilton, who attended Pitt. The Panthers have already offered the younger Hamilton, who could be the mostly highly coveted of the four.
