Oklahoma picks up up in-state wide receiver

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Sometimes, you can make a pretty good guess where certain recruits will end up at. Oklahoma City (Okla.) wide receiver Sterling Shepard was one such recruit in the class of 2012, verbally committing to Oklahoma Monday morning.

Sterling had two uncles play for the Sooners and his late father, Derrick, was a former star receiver for Oklahoma in the mid 1980's.

“This is where my heart is,” Sterling told the Oklahoman. “There is great tradition here. My father, my uncles went here. It was time.”

The 5-foot-10, 175 pound receiver is the third commitment for Oklahoma's class of 2012. Shepard is half of a football legacy duo at Heritage High along side teammate Barry Sanders Jr. and played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back last year.

One of the top recruits in the state of Oklahoma, Shepard held offers from Clemson, Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and Missouri.

“I went to Oklahoma State, and I talked to some other coaches, and I realized what I wanted,” he said. “I talked about it with my mom and my family in the last couple of days, and they’re all supportive of the decision. It’s close to home, so they can still attend the games. My older sister is at OU, so she’s really happy about it.”

Shepard had 56 receptions for over 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns last year, helping his team to an undefeated record and a state championship.

Several programs looking to impress this weekend

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Several schools around the country are looking forward to another weekend of pressing the flesh and impressing players from the class of 2012. Notre Dame, Tennessee and Washington are just three schools who are hosting a Junior Day this Saturday or Sunday.

The Huskies will hold theirs on Sunday in conjunction with the school's basketball game against in-state rival Washington State. Head coach Steve Sarkisian pulled in a MaxPreps top 20 class in 2011 and is aiming even higher in 2012. The staff has been on many of the top in-state prospects early and continues to make California a top priority on the recruiting trail.

Expected in attendance are Mercer Island (Wash.) quarterabck Jeff Lindquist, Everett (Wash.) running back Keivarae Russell and Tacoma (Wash.) Michael Rector, according to the Seattle Times. Washington does not have a commitment for next year's class but could end up picking up one or more on Sunday.

Tennessee is also looking to secure their first 2012 commitment this weekend. The Volunteers look like they will be hosting several players from the state of Georgia, which has turned into an SEC recruiting hotbed as of late. Gainesville (Ga.) running back Imani Cross is one of several players holding scholarship offers who will be in Knoxville on Saturday. Cross even told GoVolsXtra.com that there's "a high possibility (he) could just go ahead and commit to Tennessee" this weekend.

Among the other scheduled recruits are Bamberg (S.C.) defensive end Martin Aiken, Millen (Ga.) defensive end James Deloach and Anderson (S.C.) tight end Jordan Meredith

Notre Dame is also holding their first Junior Day of the year and plans on hosting about 40 recruits according to BlueandGold.com. With a national recruiting base, the Irish and head coach Brian Kelly will bring several unofficial visitors from around the country to South Bend on Saturday. Oklahoma City (Okla.) wide receiver Sterling Shepard, Hyattsville (Md.) defensive lineman Mike Moore, Spring (Texas) cornerback Nicky Baratti and Nashville (Tenn.) offensive lineman Blake Bars are among the recruits scheduled to visit.

Washington, Tennessee and Notre Dame are just three of the major program hosting Junior Days this weekend but each is looking to leave a lasting impression on the recruits who stop by to meet the coaching staff and receive a tour of the facilities. Because this is their first chance to show off for many of the players in the class of 2012, expect it to be a hectic, yet fun, weekend for the coaching staffs in Seattle, Knoxville and South Bend.
