Boom Lakalaka! Or is it Bruin Lakalaka?
Either way, UCLA picked up their first commitment for the class of 2012 as news broke Tuesday morning of the verbal pledge of Honolulu (Hawaii) running back Steven Lakalaka, finally getting the Bruins on the commitment board.
“I committed on Saturday to UCLA,” Lakalaka told Scout. “They’re a good school and they’re very similar to Punahou but a lot bigger. Coach Inoke (Breckterfield) was talking to me and I was very comfortable with him. I felt UCLA was the best school.”
The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder just recently picked up an offer from the school and had been receiving attention from several other Pac-12 schools such as Arizona and Colorado.
“Coach Inoke said they have two types of running backs, the shifty back and the power back, and I’ll come in and play the power back,” said Lakalaka. “Another reason I picked UCLA is because it’s closer for my family. They’re pretty stoked and pretty happy for me.”
Lakalaka rushed for 771 yards and four touchdowns last season as a junior at famed Hawaii Punahou High. The Bruins signed just one running back last year and will likely target another one in this class in addition to Lakalaka.
