Quay Evans commits to Mississippi State

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Head coach Dan Mullen has turned around the Mississippi State program and might have landed his biggest recruiting coup since arriving in Starkvile - literally and figuratively - after Morton (Miss.) defensive tackle Quay Evans committed to the program Thursday.

"I am committing to State and I am done with recruiting," Evans told Scout. "I have been thinking about it for a while and I just feel the most comfortable there.

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound Evans is the 4th-ranked defensive tackle according to Maxpreps. The four-star player is also ranked 44th overall in the class of 2012 and held scholarship offers from just about every school in the SEC and from across the country. Staying close to home and playing for a program on the rise were to factors in Evans decision to pick the Bulldogs however.

"I know they are bringing in the best players in Mississippi and I want to be a part of that," he. "There are some other highly rated players that are going to be coming too now that I have committed.

Evans' commitment gives Mississippi State 22 commitments in their current class a little over two months away from Signing Day. This season he's racked up 72 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

"Quay shows super strength at the point of attack and surprises people with his speed, quickness and body control," analyst Tom Lemming says of Evans. "Exceptionally aggressive, he plays the game with pride, a great attitude, and with a chip on his shoulder. He hates to be beaten and if he is, it's never repeated. He works hard to improve his game and has the confidence and cockiness enough to want to be the best DT in the country and right now he ranks among the nation's top ten."

Running back Shadrach Thornton will visit Georgia Tech officially this weekend. He's a soft verbal commit to Kentucky.

Junior quarterback Jake Hall was offered by UNLV with San Diego State, UCLA and others showing interest.

Fewer players from Texas are on Tulsa's roster but that doesn't make the state any less of a priority.

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen bashed team recruiting rankings. Of course.

Linebacker T.J. Neal has narrowed down his list of schools to Nebraska, West Virginia and Syracuse and doesn't mind traveling to get there.

There will be no official visitors for Notre Dame's game against Navy but last week's bunch left impressed.

Nebraska lands 2012 quarterback from Texas

Posted by Bryan Fischer

With Nebraska's move into the Big Ten, several were concerned that the Cornhuskers pipeline to Texas recruits would start to dry up. While the school hasn't been burning up the recruiting trail in terms of quantity of commitments, they are keeping their connections to the Lone Star state alive and well.

The latest commitment to the program is proof of that, as Nebraska picked up a verbal pledge from Cibolo (Texas) quarterback Tommy Armstrong.

"It just felt like home, the community, they really welcomed me there and I got a long with the coaches and the players and all that very well," Armstrong told HuskerOnline.com. "I felt comfortable there. My dad enjoyed it and we had a great time. I knew I could picture myself spending the next four to five years of my life there."

Armstrong held offers from Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oregon and TCU among others before choosing Nebraksa after his official visit for the Washington game this weekend. One of the key reasons he committed was the similarities in the offensive scheme in college with what he runs in high school.

"It's pretty much everything is just like our team, everything is about each and every individual on offense, from the wide receiver to running backs to quarterbacks, everybody has their part," Armstrong said. "I believe I can fit in well with their system because we do the same stuff with our offense. I can do what (Taylor) Martinez does and I can lead the team."

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound signal-caller is the seventh verbal commitment for the Huskers' class of 2012. He threw for 1,343 yards and rushed for over 500 yards last season while leading his team to a state championship.

"He shows outstanding footwork, accuracy, and a good arm," MaxPreps analyst Tom Lemming said of Armstrong. "He's very comfortable throwing the ball from the pocket but does an awful lot of damage when being chased and finding open receivers. He shows good throwing mechanics and is very good in short to medium range passes."

Armstrong is rated as the 13th best dual-threat quarterback in the country.
