SEC Recruiting Breakdown

Posted by Bryan Fischer

It was an active month on the SEC recruiting trail as we near the halfway point to Signing Day. Here's a quick take on a few of the teams as we enter July.

Alabama
The Crimson Tide added two players in June and have continued to load up on athletes that could end up helping out at multiple positions in college. Defensive tackle Darren Lake is a bit under the radar but he is the type of nose tackle that fits into Nick Saban's defense and frees up the rest of the players to make plays. The class is a bit defensive-heavy, so there could be more emphasis on offensive players in the next few months.

Auburn

June was a good month for the Tigers as they added some talented skill position players to surround quarterback Zeke Pike. JaQuay Williams is going to be a nice red zone target and T.J. Yeldon should help with running back depth once he gets to campus.

South Carolina

The Gamecocks doubled their class in June and they added quality pieces at the same time. The big pickup was Kelvin Rainey out of Florida who was drawing a bunch of attention from some powerhouse programs. The staff also has made some nice gains with several Georgia prospects and it wouldn't be all that surprising if they reel in one or two more from the state in the coming months.

Tennessee

Derek Dooley and the Vols are surprisingly the SEC recruiting runts at the moment with only three commitments. They were in on several players that ended up making commitments elsewhere, which is a bit of a blow, especially since some of them went to SEC rivals. It's not a great year for in-state talent but what players there are, the Vols have had somewhat of a hard time keeping. There's plenty of time to turn things around but the staff has their work cut out for them.

Vanderbilt

The new regime in Nashville is not backing down from anyone and there's certainly a new attitude under head coach James Franklin. They're actually the top dogs in-state at the moment and they've raided Georgia successfully for a few solid building blocks. The 'dores grabbed the top player in the state in running back Brian Kimbrow and have plenty of momentum nearing the halfway point of the recruiting season.

Yeldon says 'War Eagle,' commits to Auburn

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Daphne (Ala.) athlete T.J. Yeldon was looking to stay close to home most of the recruiting process and had Alabama and Auburn out front as his co-leaders ever since picking up a scholarship offer from each school. Not a whole lot was known as to which school he was leaning to however until Tuesday afternoon, when the talented prospect committed to the Tigers while attending their summer camp.

"I was talking to coach (Gus) Malzahn when we were going over the offense, and I just told him I was ready to do it," Yeldon told AuburnSports.com. "They were really excited and happy."

Yeldon does it all in high school and will likely line up in multiple positions once he reaches the Plains. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound speedster is primarily a tailback but has played quarterback and wide receiver as well. One of the reasons Auburn stood out and made the most sense to Yeldon was the fact that his role would not change despite making the leap to major college football.

"They told me I'm going to do the same things I do in high school, and be a versatile player," he said. "We run the same offense at our school, I am going to fit right in."

The ninth commitment for Auburn in the class of 2012, Yeldon also held offers from Clemson, Florida, Georgia and Oregon among others. He rushed for 1,112 yards and 18 touchdowns and added five more touchdowns receiving.

Anderson commits to Alabama

Posted by Bryan Fischer

There are few schools that churn out NFL defensive players like Alabama and Nick Saban was recruiting the next wave of them at this weekend's Crimson Tide Spring Game. Among the recruits in attendance looking to become the next draft pick for the school at "A-Day" was Daphne (Ala.) defensive end Ryan Anderson, who pulled the trigger on a commitment after weeks of thinking about it.

“I actually told the coaches I was about ready to commit earlier in the week,” Anderson told BamaOnLine.com. “Today, I just told them that I was ready to get on board and they said they were happy to have me. Alabama is where I want to be. There’s a lot of competition there and competition is what will make me a better player. I think I can be my best at Alabama.”

The 6-foot-3, 250 pound end was impressed with just about everything that happened in Tuscaloosa Saturday. Anderson will likely end up playing a hybrid linebacker position in college and the game gave him an opportunity to see how current Crimson Tide players performed at the position and what it was like on a game day.

“I liked the atmosphere and everything about the spring game,” he said. “I just like everything about Alabama in general. The team looked very good today and I think I’m a good fit at Jack linebacker in the defense. The fan base is also very impressive with the amount of support that they give the team.”

Anderson is the fifth in-state commitment for Alabama and 11th overall in the class of 2012. He racked up 14 sacks his junior year and is the teammate of highly recruited running back T.J. Yeldon, who holds a scholarship offer from Alabama as well.
