Just days after Cal fans reveled in the announcement of a big new media deal, they were given another reason to stay in high spirits Friday afternoon with the commitment of Concord (Calif.) linebacker Michael Barton.
"The people and the atmosphere at Cal is the place I could see myself fitting in the most out of all the schools that offered," Barton told Rivals. "I didn't want to drag this process on. I knew where I wanted to go right away and that was Cal."
The 6-foot-1, 200 pound linebacker from nearby powerhouse De La Salle High picked up an offer from the Bears about two months ago and has visited unofficially several times between then and committing. One of the major factors in pulling the trigger so early in the recruiting process was the relationship Barton developed with the coaching staff.
"I've been over there a few times already and I got really close to coach Tosh (Lupoi) and the linebackers coach, coach (Clancy) Pendergast," Barton said. "The coaching staff is just amazing there."
Barton also held offers from LSU, SMU and most of the Pac-12 schools with the notable exception of USC but selected the Bears to become the second member of their class of 2012.
"There was always an interest because I grew up watching Cal when I was little," he added.
He racked up 72 tackles and three sacks last season for the Spartans as a junior.
