Gary Pinkel drops in to see Dorial Green-Beckham

Posted by Bryan Fischer

The most popular recruiting tool of the past few years isn't an iPhone or fancy new weight room (though those really don't hurt). You may or may not be surprised to learn that it's the helicopter.

Coaches have been dropping in on recruits thanks to private planes for decades, whisked across the country without wasting time connecting through an airport thanks to the large wallets of their boosters. Lately however, the transportation de jour for impressing high school recruits while saving time has been the helicopter. UCLA's Rick Neuheisel was the first coach to make a memorable big splash with one a few years ago, flying over Los Angeles gridlock to see multiple games on Friday night and to make sure recruits knew that he was coming to see them come hell or high heights.

Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel was the latest to use a chopper when he visited the number one overall recruit in the country, Dorial Green-Beckham, yesterday.

Coach has to do what a coach has to do, right? The Tigers appear to be on the outside looking in for the man known mostly as DGB. The recruit some have compared to Randy Moss will be taking an official visit to Arkansas this week and many have pegged the Razorbacks as the favorite for his signature come Signing Day. Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Auburn are also heavily pursuing Green-Beckham, who has kept quiet about his recruitment and rarely spoken to the media.

Still, he had to be a little impressed with Pinkel's sojourn to Springfield, Missouri this week through the air. We'll tell in two weeks if it worked but the next coach might have to step up their game on the next visit to see Green-Beckham. I'm thinking a Harrier would be impressive and don't think some coach hasn't already thought about it.

Oklahoma adds Midwest running back Smith

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Oklahoma was the final official visit for Midlothian (Ill.) running back David Smith and it appears he liked what he saw, making things official and committing to the Sooners on Tuesday.

"I talked it over with my parents, my coach, and next fall I'll be attending the university of Oklahoma," Smith said at a press conference.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound back also held offers from schools such as Cincinnati, Purdue and West Virginia. Maxpreps' 15th-ranked tailback has been high on Oklahoma for some time and should fit in well in their offensive system.

"Shoot, I'm just excited, I don't know. I'm just excited about this, I don't know what to say really. It's crazy man," Smith told SoonerScoop.com. "I mean, it's a dream come true."

Smith rushed for 837 yards and topped 1,000 all-purpose yards last season as a senior. He is Oklahoma's 19th class of 2012 commitment.

"He shows outstanding vision, speed, and cutting ability," analyst Tom Lemming said. "A compact type of back who is a patient runner, he can accelerate on a dime, plays with good balance, runs hard between the tackles, and seems to get stronger as the game progresses. He really came into his own the second half of last season and has become one of the more heavily recruited RB prospects in the Midwest."

Harris makes flip to Texas A&M official

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Lost amid some of the brouhaha surrounding the Gunner Kiel and Ellis McCarthy switches on Monday night was the commitment of former Oklahoma pledge and Mesquite (Texas) cornerback De'Vante Harris to Texas A&M.

"Officially committed to Texas A&M University!" Harris tweeted.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound corner decommitted from the Sooners shortly after playing in the Under Armour All-American game and it wasn't too long before he was headed to the SEC to play for the Aggies. He also held offers from schools such as Ohio State, Nebraska and Tennessee.

Harris' father, Rod, was a star receiver for A&M in the 1980's. The younger Harris recently took a visit to College Station to meet new head coach Kevin Sumlin and position coach Marcel Yates during the school's big recruiting weekend and that appeared to seal the deal.

With his pledge, Harris becomes Texas A&M's 24th commitment in the class of 2012 with just over two weeks until Signing Day.

Patrick Miller shockingly enrolls at Auburn

By MaxPreps' Stephen Spiewak

Patrick Miller, once committed to LSU, has enrolled at AuburnDwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) head coach Jack Daniels confirmed.

Daniels told MaxPreps today that Miller was set to enroll early at LSU. However, the day after the BCS title game, LSU told Miller that it only had five scholarships available and seven players enrolling early.

LSU asked Miller's father to pay for the spring semester, which prompted Miller and his family to explore other options.

Auburn, which currently has a small recruiting class, welcomed Miller with open arms.

The 6-foot-7, 270-pound Miller had been verbally committed to LSU since the fall, and was part of a loaded offensive line group that included Vadal Alexander and Derek Edinburgh.

Now, Miller joins an Auburn recruiting class that features quarterback Zeke Pike, who has also enrolled early.

The weeks leading up to National Signing Day often see a number of recruits decommit.

Last week, Top 100 defensive back Ronald Darby reneged on his verbal commitment to Notre Dame, while Devante Harris backed off his pledge to Oklahoma.

1/10 Recruiting Roundup

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Alabama won the national title last night and could be in line for another in February based on the updated Maxpreps team rankings.

TCU is recruiting and signing elite athletes with their move to the Big 12.

Five West Virginia recruits are already enrolled for the spring.

A look at Georgia's big board and who they have left to recruit.

Running back David Smith picked up a late Oklahoma offer and will visit the school officially.

Cal commit Bryce Treggs apparently likes to express himself at basketball games.

Todd Graham's first commitment at Arizona State is a Canadian.

Texas recruit Johnathan Gray is in a walking boot after a high ankle sprain suffered in the Under Armour game.
