6/27 Recruiting Roundup

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Arizona State is putting together a very good class of 2012.

BYU wants the top recruits and it doesn't matter if they're Mormon or not.

Marcus Allen, a class of 2012 linebacker and not the Marcus Allen, is considering Arkansas for an official visit.

A couple of updates on some Michigan targets.

Joe Paterno is not a fan of 7-on-7 camps. At all.

Commitments:

Indiana has picked up four players for their upcoming class.

Iowa got a commitment from a 6-foot-6 kicker, Connor Kornbrath, who you probably won't mess with like other kickers.

Georgia running back Nick Tompkins is headed north to Michigan State.

Maryland landed another commitment from the state of Georgia in wide out A.J. Liddell.

Ole Miss added offensive tackle Jake Meador to their upcoming class.

Washington picked up a commitment from punter Korey Durkee.

Junior college tight end Blake Jackson is planning on visiting Arkansas at least one more time. In-state recruiting has changed since the arrival of Bobby Petrino.

Defensive end Jhaustin Thomas has Florida high on his list.

Colorado is losing the in-state recruiting battle so far this year.

Iowa is casting a wide net in recruiting and it's paid off with a few commitments.

Defensive back Jermaine Edmondson could be on the verge of getting an offer from Michigan State.

- Wide receiver Austin Aikens has been blowing up this summer.

Commitments:

Florida cornerback Ellis Marder committed to UConn

Kicker Jaden Oberkrom will head a few miles west after committing to TCU.

Safety Jeremy Clark has accepted a greyshirt offer at Michigan.

Stanford added three wide receiviers to their recruiting class in Kodi Whitfield, Connor Crane and Deante' Gray. The Cardinal also nabbed a commitment from safety Drew Madhu.

Penn State added two defensive tackles in Austin Johnson and Derek Dowrey.

D.C. running back commits to West Virginia

Posted by Bryan Fischer

Anytime a player goes on an unofficial visit, fans and media members are generally on their toes about a possible commitment. Such was the case this week as Washington (D.C.) running back Albert Reid made the trip down to Morgantown and ended up leaving a verbal pledge for West Virginia.

"I just committed because it was a second home. I feel comfortable up there. I like the offense they run and I feel myself fitting in really good," Reid told WVSports.com. "I just felt like it was home."

With a mostly new coaching staff, including new head coach Dana Holgorsen, the chance to get to know them better on the visit allowed Reid to feel comfortable enough to make a decision.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound back also held scholarship offers from Iowa, Colorado, Stanford and Vanderbilt among others. Reid becomes the eighth overall commitment for West Virginia in 2012 and fifth on offense, which is no surprise given Holgorsen's reputation for explosive offenses.

His highlights are below:

Iowa nabs versatile Chicago athlete

Posted by Bryan Fischer

After starting off their class of 2012 slow, Iowa is starting to pick up some momentum. The Hawkeyes added their third commitment this week on Thursday night and got a good one in versatile Chicago athlete Maurice Fleming Jr.

"I just got off the phone with the coaches at Iowa and I gave them my verbal commitment," Fleming Jr. told Rivals. "In the end the chance to play for the Hawkeyes was just too much for me to pass up. It's a great opportunity for me at Iowa and I decided I'm done. I'm a solid commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes."

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder was one of the top performers at the Ohio State Nike Camp and he's equally good at wide receiver and cornerback but will end up on the defensive side of the ball for the Hawkeyes. While he held offers from Cincinnati, Indiana and Wisconsin among others, heading to Iowa City next fall was just the best fit for him.

"Really it was everything for me at Iowa," he said. "I know they will make me a great person and a great player. I want to be a shut down corner for them and I also want to be one of the best cornerbacks in the country and Iowa will help me get to that level. Iowa is just a big-time school, and a big-time atmosphere and again everything just feels right for me with Iowa. My dream has been to play in the Big Ten and to also get to the NFL someday, and I can't think of a better school for that than Iowa."

Fleming Jr. is the fourth commitment for Iowa's class of 2012 and second to hail from the state of Illinois.
