Kubina gets three-game ban for hit on Bolland

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina received a three-game suspension for an elbow to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland, the NHL announced Thursday.

The collision occurred two minutes into Wednesday’s game and no penalty was assessed on the play. Bolland went to the locker room and did not return.

Kubina will forfeit $60,096.76 in salary and be eligible to return March 17 for a game against the Montreal Canadiens

UPDATE: Here's a statement from Kubina just released by the Lightning:

“I understand the decision rendered by the National Hockey League today and I will fully abide by the ruling. I had no intent to injure David (Bolland) and I hope he can return to the ice quickly. I didn’t realize he was injured on the play until being notified by the NHL that a hearing would take place to review the hit.

“I have played nearly 900 games in the NHL and my history and record demonstrates that I am not the type of player that ever attempts to injure other players. I am sorry David was hurt on the play.

“I look forward to rejoining my teammates in Montreal next Thursday as we continue our push for the playoffs, and I hope David returns to the ice soon to join the Blackhawks.”
